The Chassis Designers Bible, Amen

There is yet to be a book written, that describes the why's and how's of designing a light-weight, high-performance sports car chassis in a more informative, yet pleasantly readable style than "Racing and Sports Car Chassis Design". There are other, more contemporary titles on this topic, and having read many of them, I have a strong impression that their authors were much influenced by this book; perhaps having studied it in their college and university years. That would not be surprising, for it is forty years since the author, Michael Costin, then Development Director of Lotus Cars Ltd., with technical writer David Phipps and automotive artist, James A. Allington completed what was to be acclaimed by the industry, and motoring enthusiasts, as the Chassis Designers' Bible.
Costin was also a chief chassis designer at Lotus Engineering, one-time home of many of the most creative and innovative thinkers in the history of motor-sports. He later became the Cos' of Cosworth fame. Quite a motor-sports pedigree!
The theory and basic principles of chassis design, including methods for chassis stress calculation, plotting suspension geometry, and selecting materials for a winning space-frame chassis are all comprehensively covered. The text is classically crafted, making this a reference book for the `coffee table' reader too. It is complemented with excellent illustrations and (now historical) photographs, and the reader will enjoy a revealing treatise from a fascinating period in motor-sports development. Reference to the appendices explaining the essential mathematical calculations, tables of materials specifications and the glossary will assist understanding of the engineering principles, and will be invaluable to the novice chassis designer. This is the material that contemporary writers have often, unfortunately, left out.
The sections on suspension, while now dated, examine the conflicting forces that influence road-holding and vehicle dynamics, and assess the advantages and disadvantages of the various suspension types then in use. The technology may have developed, but the principles that applied then still apply today, and would be readily recognized by todays engineering student.
If you are a motorsports enthusiast, and particularly one interested in building your own racing or sports car, then this book, though now out of print, is well worth the search. Of course, if you are planning to build a monocoque, or a composite-bodied racer, then you'll have to supplement this book with more recent titles.
As a current Lotus-Seven-inspired-sportscar builder, I value and constantly refer to my copy, and strongly recommend it to like-minded enthusiasts.

The Original and Still the Best Book on Tubular Spaceframes

If you are thinking of building a "Locost" replica of the Lotus Seven according to Ron Champion's Build Your Own Sports Car for as Little as £250 and Race It!, you would be well advised to consult this book to see how Champion's design could be improved. As reviewer Ian Carter can probably attest, a chassis built straight from Champion's book will not pass the Australian government's mandatory test of torsional rigidity. A Web search for "Locost" will yield thousands of hits from which you can eventually dig out some minor improvements to the Locost chassis that will allegedly double its stiffness. But if the principles so clearly presented by Costin and Phipps were applied in a complete redesign, the chassis stiffness could probably be doubled again due to improved triangulation and the use of round rather than square tubing. (Sure, square tubing is easier to weld but structurally it's equivalent to round tubing that has already collapsed on four sides!)

the best book in existence on automobile chassis design

Mike Costin was chassis designer at Lotus, and also co-founded Cosworth.
This book shows, in brief and clear style, how to design a fully triangulated space-frame type chassis that will carry loads as efficiently as possible,and how to design a suspension to give both good ride and good roadholding.
If you wish to design a modern day car using a tubular space frame, this book is absolutely essential. It will be very helpful as well to those wanting to design ultralight mileage record or solar cars. Even designers of monocoque chassis will find excellent ideas as to where their load paths should be going, and how their suspension movement should be controlled.
Don't be put off by the fact that the book is almost 40 years old. If you plan to build a space frame, find a copy.

Make room in your fridge!

Simple, fun, and delicious- these clear and easy-to-follow recipes are seriously greatl. I've already made a few cakes so far and each is better than the last. Though you're going to want to rush this into your pie hole (cake hole?) you should heed their warnings about setting times!

Lovely delicious little book!

Love this book! The flavor combinations are inventive, yet so approachable. Salty Milk Dud? Yes, please! Lemon-caramel? Sign me up! I love that there are recipes for making absolutely everything from scratch (wafers, grahams, creams, puddings, and sauces), but they give tips if you want to use store-bought shortcut ingredients instead. I never thought to use the Trader Joe's Meyer Lemon Thins in an ice box cake before now.
The book is beautifully photographed, the writing is witty, the recipes are easy to follow, and delicious to boot! Such a great book!

Icebox cakes---some are a lot of work, an awful lot of work! Don't let the idea of an icebox cake make you think that these recipes are easy---they're not. Interesting but a whole lotta work for some mighty small cakes.

Gripping and beautifully written!

You don't have to love historical fiction to love this book. Nor do you have to appreciate sculpture, or care about the politics of public art. You don't even have to be able to find Paris on a map. No, all it takes to love this book is a willingness to lose yourself in a story about a woman whose motto, if she lived now, would've been "Go big or go home."

Camille Claudel (about whom I knew exactly nothing) is a heroine I won't soon forget. Consumed by her drive to create, and inflamed by her love for her tutor, Auguste Rodin, Camille achieves more than any woman sculptor of her time, and pays the price at every level. Passion, heartache, entanglements and betrayal--it's all here.

Webb frames the story beautifully, carrying us into nineteenth century Paris and through the studios, salons and homes of the working artists and their models, benefactors, rivals and families. Her writing is precise (but never arch), assured and utterly convincing. I could feel the clay in Claudel's hand, and the fire in her heart.

Fast-paced and filled with raw emotion, Rodin's Lover is an impressive achievement, and a reminder of the power of great stories about great lives, whenever they were lived.

Exceptionally researched

Webb’s illustration of the complicated and abundantly talented artist Camille Claudel focuses on her tumultuous and licentious affair with Auguste Rodin, a man penetrating her heart yet elusive for her to possess.

Exceptionally researched, Webb highlights the art world in all its glory and harshness. The politics, power and societal propriety seizing artists and their creativity creating a fissure of misunderstanding. A world full of sexism and misogyny as female artists struggle to penetrate a male dominated world, an improper vocation fitting a woman.

Webb provides snippets of Claudel, more could have been offered besides her love of Rodin and their forbidden dalliance. Rodin comes across as weak, a man hopelessly in love with his artistic equal but bound by obligation and duty preventing a full fledged commitment with Claudel.

Despite their runaway attraction, the narrative fails to convey their deep rooted connection, it feels flat, lack of spark. Their mutual appetite for sculpting is also tempered. Two obsessive creatures in both art and love are not expressed as they could be in the narrative, rather a quiet storm leaving the reader anticipating and wanting more declared.

I was hoping Claudel’s slow descent into ‘madness’ was examined more. What drove her to ‘madness’ or was she a victim shut away for convenience sake of her ‘family’ as a maverick, an intelligent independent woman craving more or was art the culprit – much delving left wide open in this area.

An entertaining read, it’s a romance narrative rather than an in depth probe into the woman Camille Claudel. A woman worthy of notice and artistic praise as her life is often questioned in its shroud of mystery and unanswered questions. I was expecting Webb to take a different avenue with Claudel, despite my frustration this is a worthwhile read, if anything the reader will want to discover more of Camille Claudel on their own of her life, art, and tragic circumstances.

Realistic, tender, passionate historical novel in Belle Époque Paris

Webb's second novel focuses on a less well known figure, French Belle Époque sculptor Camille Claudel, and this novel surpasses her first (which was pretty fabulous!).

Camille is a bit of a savant, a self-taught sculptor with immense talent and a matching ego. Driven to pursue her art, she receives tutoring in Paris from one of France's preeminent sculptors, but her family is split in their support of her passion. Camille's father supports her while her mother rages against the unorthodox behavior of her daughter. While her mother tries to arrange a marriage, Camille is instead drawn to her newest tutor, the much lauded Auguste Rodin.

Lest you fear this is just another hist fic focusing on a lady with a famous lover, let me reassure you this is a far more complicated, rich, and eventful story. Camille is a hard heroine to love: prickly, confident to the point of obnoxious, and single-minded. In Webb's hands, she isn't softened nor does she turn flat the moment she falls into her lover's arms.

In fact, Webb's emotional sensitivity is something I've come to admire in her books as the dramatic events unfold without veering into melodrama. Webb doesn't shy from the hard, heartbreaking parts of Camille's life (I'm being vague about these parts for those unfamiliar with Camille's story, but there's nothing fluffy here!) and intense moments are touched with humor, bittersweet sadness, or irony, making it impossible for this reader to shake Camille's story.

I sometimes find books about artists tricky; it can be hard to render into compelling narrative endeavors that depend on other senses. But Webb managed to evoke the tactile experience of sculpting as well as describing the various sculptures and pieces of art without sounding like a text book. I "saw" the works even without having to google them (although google I did!). I have to give a particular shout out to Joshua DeLillo, who sketched three of Camille's works for use in this novel. They look like photographs, they're so finely rendered, and were a welcome addition to the story.

This is the second novel I read since having my baby (and the second for 2015), and it was a knockout -- well worth stealing time to read. It's a fabulous read for those who enjoy biographical novels; I'm particularly reminded of Melanie Benjamin, who I also think takes shocking, notorious lives and renders them realistically, tenderly, and with empathy. Enjoy this one with espresso or cocoa over a snowy weekend.

The Dragons' Demon

Taking a break from her job of helping people decide between Heaven and Hell, Eve goes for a drink with her brothers. Eve Sinclair cannot believe her ears when her brothers state that not only did they steal a dragon's egg, but a royal one at that. A prank gone bad, Eve heads out to locate the egg and return it to its nest before anyone realizes it gone. Being a higher demon, Eve cannot allow either her or her brothers to be found with the egg. Never did Eve expect the feelings that affect her the minute she picks up the egg.

Ranton is the leader of the Dragon warriors and was placed in charge of this particular egg as its guardian. Finding it not only in the arms of a demon, but happily there, Ranton decides to discover just what this demon has that the dragons would want. Ranton soon discovers what Eve has that he wants and the extremely hot sex is only part of it. Both Eve and Ranton are shaken by the instantaneous passion they experience. Ranton knows just how the dragon in the egg, his brother, will matter in the future of the dragons. After the egg brought them together, will he also stand between Ranton and Eve?

The Dragons' Demonbrings both dragons and demons together - not something that usually will happen. Eve is a higher demon with a demanding job, but even she cannot allow anything happen to a defenseless dragon egg. Ranton is furious that an egg under his protection was taken from the dragon nest, but he's even more surprised when he finds it. Eve and Ranton start off circling around each other, but I was not surprised by the quickness of the passion between them. I was surprised when the egg hatched and just what changes this dragon brought to not only Eve and Ranton, but also to other characters in this mix up. The world of dragons and demons will never be the same again. The Dragons' Demon is a sexy look at demons and dragons that has several humorous points. If you love reading about beings of the underworld, then you will want to add The Dragons' Demon to your library.

Trying to fix the potential damage caused by her brothers' irresponsible prank, Eve is left holding the proverbial bag. Only in this case, the bag is a royal dragon egg, and none other than the Commander of the dragon legion himself has come to collect the precious egg and punish the wrongdoers.

But Ranton's ideas for punishment change dramatically when he lays eyes on the beautiful little demon holding his baby brother's egg...

I'll admit it, I am very partial to stories with dragons - especially shape shifting dragons - but even considering my own partiality to the genre, I can safely state that Marie Harte's The Dragons' Demon absolutely rocked!!! Harte's offering to Samhain Publishing's I Dream of Dragons 1 anthology is extremely sensual, with plenty of M/F love scenes and a few M/F/M ménage scenes, but she ingeniously mixes it up with a good dose of real emotion. Although a short story, it is easy to feel the attraction between these characters, and even easier to understand when that attraction grows into something more real.

Ranton has to be one of the hottest dragons around - in more ways than one - and his possessiveness of spunky little demon Eve fans the flames of heat even higher in this sassy romance.

Eve is more than capable of holding her own with the domineering dragon commander, and pulls a few tricks of her own that keep Ranton on his toes!

I haven't found any information on either the author's or publisher's sites regarding whether The Dragons' Demon is or will be connected to other stories by Marie Harte, but I will most certainly be standing in line for any sequels that are released. There were several supporting characters I would dearly love to see more of!

Higher demon Eve Sinclair's bet with her siblings has gone very wrong and it's left up to her to fix it. She never believed that they'd actually go along with it and steal a dragon egg and bring it to the Ordinary world but now it's up to her to fix the situation - hopefully before it hatches.

Her job of swaying souls teetering on the brink of Decision will have to be put on hold while she retrieves the dragon egg and returns it to Carmaron before she discovers that her precious egg is missing. There's only one little problem with her plan, the missing dragon's egg has already been discovered - by Ranton, the commander of the dragon legion, and the caretaker of the missing egg. To complicate matters, this isn't just any ordinary dragon's egg . . . oh no, this is a royal egg, it's the future dragon king.

From the moment Eve finds the egg where James and Duncan said they'd left it she feels an immediate bond with the tiny being inside. She knows that she'll never let the egg go despite the fact that demons and dragons do not mix. Soon after finding the egg, Ranton arrives demanding it from her. She refuses to turn it over to him and Ranton is befuddled by the egg's obvious contentment while being held in Eve's arms. The simple fact that the egg is so peacefully lying against the chest of a demon proves that she's special. Ranton is equally curious to find out the identities of the individuals who originally stole the egg and what's so special about this demon that has his future king is such a state of bliss. Never mind the attraction to her that he feels himself. Be prepared for some severe clashing of wills as demons, angels, and dragons collide and battle it out over who's really guilty of stealing a royal dragon's egg.

Marie Harte will leave readers gasping for breath with her contribution to the I DREAM OF DRAGONS series. THE DRAGON'S DEMON gives readers a variety of characters whom we generally think of as evil or villainess and presents them as the type of `people' you'd actually like to know. I got a huge kick out of Eve and the egg's attachment for one another but even more than that loved the ongoing battle between Eve and Ranton for dominance. She's no shrinking violet and isn't about to put up with his big nasty dragon disposition so reading about these two coming together is a lot of fun. Obviously there will be trouble stemming from the theft of the dragon's egg in the first place and I'm dying to know how that turns out for James and Duncan who are both sent off for their punishments toward the end of this story. Wonderfully done Ms. Harte! This is a fun tale which I highly recommend.
