Flora Rheta Schreiber was the psychiatry editor of Science Digest when she first heard about Sybil. She spent seven years writing this book. She is also the author of The Shoemaker. She died in 1988 in New York City of a heart attack.

READ IT ONCE .... YOU WILL REMEMBER IT ALWAYS

It is impossible to say a book on such a sensitive and horrific issue as child abuse is a great book to read; in fact, this book is probably one of the most difficult ones to read that you will ever come across. Having studied psychology, it is a known fact that Multiple Personality Disorder(MPD) is associated with child abuse. The personality "splits" when the human psyche can no longer cope with the pain of abuse.
Sybil is a story of such abuse at the hands of a mentally disturbed mother - sexual, physical and emotional abuse prevail. Sybil is a true story based on one of the most severe cases of MPD and child abuse in history. Over a span of twenty years, it reveals the various "personalities" living within one woman. How one could even survive such atrocities is beyond belief. The time period of this story ends in the 40's. Today, research continues on this subject and much has been learned since Sybil's case, but one can never have enough knowledge.
Sybil's personalities eventually merge and in 1998, the real Sybil died, finding, we hope, final peace and contentment. If you are interested in books on MPD, another true life story is, First Person Plural: My Life as a Multiple, by Cameron West, PH.D.

Spellbinding case study of multiple personality

In 1954, a thin, nervous young woman walked into the office of New York psychiatrist Cornelia Wilbur complaining of unusual "spells". She would inexplicably "lose time", fading out of consciousness and coming to again hours or even days later, often in an unfamiliar city and wearing clothing she never remembered buying. Believing it to be a case of hysteria, Dr. Wilbur embarks on what she thinks will be a routine course of treatment. Until, that is, her patient strode into the office one day with a confident, almost aristocratic air. "Sybil couldn't come," she says, "you can call me Vicky." Dr. Wilbur realized she was dealing with a victim of multiple personality disorder, then almost unheard of. For Dr. Wilbur and the young woman (whom the author gives the pseudonym of Sybil) it was the beginning of an emotionally exhausting eleven-year journey to make a fractured human being whole again.
In the course of her treatment, Sybil proved to have no less than sixteen different personalities (including two male alters, Mike and Sid). The sophisticated Vicky was the "record keeper" of the selves, holding back the memories too painful for Sybil and the others to know. Peggy Lou was the repository of Sybil's anger--defiant, belligerent, contemptuous of Sybil and terrified of breaking glass; Vanessa, a redhead with impressive musical talent. Some, like Ruthie, were barely more than toddlers mentally.
Vicky had good reason to keep the memories in check. Sybil had endured a childhood so horrible the word "nightmarish" doesn't do it justice. The child of a schizophrenic mother, (called "Hattie") and a passive, distant Fundamentalist father, Sybil never knew what awful or outlandish thing her mother was liable to do. An abused child before the term existed, Sybil was forced to endure physical and sexual torture that seems chilling even in our tabloid tell-all age. Rape and inexplicable, unnecessary forced enemas were a daily ritual until the age of six or seven--the angry, frightened Peggy Lou had to emerge to endure the unending agony.
Schreiber paints a vivid portrait of Sybil's family and the conservative town in which she grew up, and while we discover a clear history of schizophrenia on the maternal side of Sybil's family, Schreiber places most of the blame at the feet of Sybil's father Willard. He had known of his wife Hattie's schizophrenia from the time Sybil was six, when Hattie submerged into a mysterious catatonic state for an entire winter. Yet he made no attempt to hospitalize her, weakly protesting that he couldn't separate a mother and her child. The child's one escape from this hellish woman came in the form of her grandmother--when she died, Sybil's self disappeared. When she re-emerges, she finds herself in a fifth-grade classroom--almost two years later.
After years of harrowing, almost fatal crises, Sybil's selves are eventually reunited in 1965--when she is forty-two. For forty of those years, she was a living mosaic, a collection of parts. Hers was touted as a classic case of MPD and childhood abuse. Yet, not long after the death of the real Sybil in the early nineties, controversy arose over the accuracy of the account. Some professionals alleged that Sybil had not been a multiple personality at all, and may in fact have never been abused. Dr. Wilbur knew this, they maintain, as did the author--the "personalities" had supposedly been planted in Sybil's mind under hypnosis. The truth may never be known, but it is an undeniable fact such cases do occur, and as such, "Sybil" is a primer for anyone wanting to know the nature and origins of multiple personality.

The book itself is poorly put together.. the book literally fell apart 2 days into reading it.. every page I turn falls out. Great read but I'm getting frustrated continuing to read it since I have to keep making sure the pages are in the right order.

About the Author
James Donovan (1916-1970) graduated from Fordham University and Harvard Law School. A line officer in the Navy during World War II, he became general counsel of the Office of Strategic Services. He then was associate prosecutor at the principal Nuremberg trial. He was the Democratic candidate for United States senator from New York in 1962, served as a general counsel for the Cuban families committee, obtaining the release of more than 9,700 Cubans and Americans from Castro’s Cuba, and was president of the Board of Education of the City of New York.

James Donovan's real story...

I'm pretty sure that most of the people reading this review of "Strangers on the Bridge", by the late James Donovan, found their way here after seeing the Steven Spielberg/Tom Hanks movie, "Bridge of Spies". Hanks starred as the lawyer in the Rudolf Abel spy case and subsequent prisoner exchange in Berlin of Abel for Francis Gary Powers and a graduate student, Frederic Pryor.

While the movie showed some of the Abel capture and then the trial, and finally the appeal to the United States Supreme Court, it really couldn't go into the detail that Donovan does in his 1964 book. Donovan - not to be confused with fellow lawyer and OSS founder, William "Wild Bill" Donovan - gives a steady account of both the trial and the exchange on the Glienike Bridge, which spans the Havel River in Berlin.

"Strangers on a Bridge" isn't particularly exciting book, but it is written with a eye towards giving the truth, rather than the Hollywood version of the case. Certainly Spielberg and the Coen brothers do take artistic license with James Donovan and Rudolf Abel and Francis Gary Powers, but it seems less than many other "based on real life" movies that are made.

James Donovan died in 1970 at the age of 53, of, I think, a heart attack. He left a legacy of government work behind, beginning with an early stint with the OSS, then working on the Nurenburg War trials, continuing with the defense of Soviet spy Rudol Abel, and also helping with an exchange of prisoners in Cuba. He must have been quite a guy.

Mr. Donovan, one of the most memorable modern character I have encountered in my reading life during the last few years. He is a man with such deep character. Honest, brilliant, hard working conducts himself with a spirit of excellence in everything he does. He is compassionate and loves God and his family. Something rare in our society. Colonel Abel is also a very interesting individual. It was difficult to put this book down. I did not want to story to end. I am going to reread this book. I have not read the book based on the movie, but this is definitely the book on which the movie was based.

I bought this book after seeing the movie Bridge of Spies. It sat on my Kindle unread for months. I finally started to read it and I could hardly put it down. Even knowing how things "came out" the detail in this book and insight into the legal and negotiating process in this book is terrific. Donovan was one hell of an attorney, negotiator, and American. Able was quite an interesting person as well with many very admirable characteristics. I highly recommend this book.

Dan Awrey is an Associate Professor of Law and Finance and Academic Director of the MSc in Law and Finance programme at the University of Oxford. His teaching and research interests reside in the area of financial regulation and, more specifically, the regulation of banks, investment funds, derivatives markets, and financial market infrastructure.

Paul Davies is a Senior Research Fellow at Harris Manchester College, Oxford, UK. He was Allen & Overy Profesor of Corporate Law, University of Oxford, from 2009-2014; Cassel Professor of Commercial Law at the London School of Economics and Political Science, 1998-2009; and, before that, Professor of the Law of the Enterprise, University of Oxford.He is a Fellow of the British Academy, an honorary Queen's Counsel and an honorary Bencher of Gray's Inn.

Luca Enriques is the Allen & Overy Professor of Corporate Law at the University of Oxford. His scholarship explores corporate law, corporate governance, securities regulation, and financial regulation. Among his many publications are numerous articles in major European and US reviews and journals, as well as several books. Enriques has held visiting appointments at the University of Cambridge, the Interdisciplinary Center Hertzliya, Harvard Law School, and the Instituto de Impresa (Madrid). He previously taught at LUISS University (Rome) and the University of Bologna and was a Commissioner at the Italian S.E.C. (Consob) between 2007 and 2012.

Jeffrey N. Gordon is the Richard Paul Richman Professor of Law at Columbia Law School and co-director of the Richman Center for Business, Law and Public Policy and the Millstein Center for Global Markets and Corporate Ownership. He is also a visiting professor at Oxford University and a Fellow of the European Corporate Governance Institute. He has written extensively on corporate governance and mergers and acquisitions over his academic career but after events in fall 2008 began teaching and writing on financial regulation. Before becoming a law professor, he worked at the US Treasury and a private law firm in New York City.

Colin Mayer is the Peter Moores Professor of Management Studies at the Said Business School at the University of Oxford. He is a Professorial Fellow of Wadham College, Oxford, and an Honorary Fellow of Oriel College, Oxford and St Anne's College, Oxford. He is a Fellow of the British Academy, the European Corporate Governance Institute, and the Royal Society of Arts. He is a member of the UK Competition Appeal Tribunal and the International Advisory Board of the Securities and Exchange Board of India. Colin Mayer was the first professor at the Said Business School in 1994, the Peter Moores Dean of the Business School between 2006 and 2011, and the first Director of the Oxford Financial Research Centre between 1998 and 2005. He was the chairman of Oxera Ltd. between 1986 and 2010 and a member of the UK Government Natural Capital Committee between 2012 and 2015. He is a director of Aurora Energy Research Ltd.

Jennifer Payne is Professor of Corporate Finance Law at the University of Oxford where she teaches courses on company law, corporate finance law, corporate insolvency law, and principles of financial regulation. She has held visiting positions at leading international institutions including the University of Auckland, NUS University of Singapore, the University of Melbourne, and the University of British Columbia. She has written widely in the field of corporate law in leading journals and edited collections, and is the author of several books, including The Oxford Handbook of Financial Regulation (OUP 2015, with Niamh Moloney and Eilis Ferran).

Not for beginners

Logic has an elegant simplicity to it that this author tries valiantly to capture, but fails. If one is already acquainted with propositional and predicate calculus, this is a joy to read for its elegance (something often attributed to Mates, but I think erroneously). This is a second-course, not a first encounter, text. But once the foundations of logical theory are laid, this is worthy of beholding the same concepts from a purely mathematical perspective.

A Solid and Well-Written Introduction to Propositional and Predicate Logic

D. S. Heersink comments in his review that this book is not for beginners; I think he very much mistaken. I was lucky to encounter this book early. It quite carefully develops the concepts involved (in particular it carefully explains what is expected of the operation of implication -- this point can confuse some students and Stolyar goes out of his way to explain the special truth-functional notion of implication and its relation to the more general concept of "conditionals," the idea of entailment and meaningful content, &c.).

After carefully developing the concepts in an informal way, the book delves into formal systems. I think that too many books spend too much time on the informal aspects and only negatively impact comprehension by waiting (and waiting...and waiting...) to introduce more formal matters. Stolyar always indicates alternative notational conventions, so that readers are not confused on encountering different textbooks.

The book covers briefly the use of logic for designing logic circuits, and in both its bibliography and footnotes provides further references on the subjects it discusses (including sources on the history of logic, notably Kneale and Kneale's "The Development of Logic"). The book was written quite a while ago, so the sources and some of the content are dated (next to no model theory, though by page 48 at least the general idea of metalogical features is introduced...probably the most sophisticated text it refers to is Kleene's "Introduction to Metamathematics," which is once again in print thanks to Isha Press International, though Kleene too suffers from a lack of model theory).

Different people do learn in different ways. I would categorize this book for "the serious student" -- not that it is particularly difficult to dive into, but for the purposes of (for instance) the most elementary of philosophy-logic-or philosophical logic classes, yes, yes, the formal development may not be necessary. And since it only touches on the aspect of circuit design, if this happens to be the reason you are interested in logic, you may wan to look elsewhere (though I would urge gaining a general comprehension before pursuing circuit-design or computer science applications).

But judge for yourself: there is a "Look Inside" preview available, and plenty of information on the Dover Publications website. The book is cheap: even if you don't like it (and don't return it) you will only lose a few bucks. But don't fret. I think it will be worth your investment.

The chronic bedwetting son of a teenaged cigarette factory worker and a nineteen-year-old miner, Gary grew up in a condemned Nottingham slum, and left his tough comprehensive school without taking any exams to follow his dad down the pit.

He spent his teenage years as a drunken football hooligan known as 'Animal' (for his terrible eating habits, not his fighting skills), baking pies at Pork Farms, stacking shelves at Asda, and trying and failing to become (among other things) a miner, a bricklayer, and a fireman. After being convicted of fraud and sentenced to six months (he worked out how to fiddle pub fruit machines), he was homeless for some years.

Finally deciding to make something of himself, he took O and A levels and hitch-hiked to Bristol University as a mature law student in his mid 20s. After three hilarious years - he somehow managed to wangle a job with a Beverly Hills law firm before he'd even graduated - he went on to become a barrister and, twenty years later, achieved the rare honour of being appointed Queen's Counsel.

His preposterous story - which contains some fascinating details of the many major cases he has worked on - reads like a strange dream and redefines the word 'amazing', as well as being extremely funny, very moving, and utterly life-affirming.

This now-dated but still useful guide "World Army Uniforms Since 1939" is actually guides in one. The first half of this volume contains "Army Uniforms of World War 2". This portion covers uniforms of the British, French, German and Russian armies, although some representation for the smaller combatant nations is provided. The uniform section is followed by shorter sections on common small arms and personal equipment.

The second half contains "Army Uniforms Since 1945." This portion covers the Cold War flashpoints such as Korea and Vietnam, and the various national wars of liberation in places such as Cypress, Lebanon and Palestine.

In each section, the format is the same: a series of color plates, followed by a notes section with narrative description of the plates. An introduction to each half lays out a short historical summary and notes on some particular aspects of uniforms, such as designation of arm of service. At less than 200 pages, this is a compact recognition guide for the student or historian used to seeing photographs of soliders from the Second World War and later conflicts which lack identification of soldier uniforms and equipment.

This handy guide is highly recommended to students of the Second World War and the conflicts of the Cold War.

Superb reference for WW2 modellers and figure painters

This is an omnibus collection of two books: Army Uniforms of World War 2 and Army Uniforms Since 1945.
The first book is an excellent reference for WW2 enthusiasts, especially modellers and figure painters. It contains complete uniform, equipment and weapons information for most army arms.
This is an army uniform book. It does not touch naval or air corps uniforms at all.
The uniforms and equipment are shown in colour plates, the weapons in B&W.
The second book only covers world army uniforms up to the early eighties (Zimbabwe is still Rhodesia), but it covers cold-war uniforms extremely well.
Well worth it if you can find it.
