About the Author

Elizabeth E. Guzmán is the Director of the Elementary and Intermediate Spanish Language Program at the University of Iowa. Previously, she served as Language Coordinator at St. John’s University/College of St. Benedict, Director of the Spanish Program at Yale University, and Coordinator and Co-Director of the Elementary and Intermediate Language Program at The University of Michigan. In her native Chile, she supervised instructors of English as a Foreign Language. Ms. Guzmán received her B.A in English from Universidad de Santiago (Chile) and her M.A. in English as a Second Language from West Virginia University, and then pursued doctoral studies at the University of Pittsburgh. She is a co-author of Pearson’s Unidos, Identidades and several earlier editions of Mosaicos.

 

Paloma Lapuerta holds the title ofProfessor of Spanish at Central Connecticut State University, where she teaches courses in Spanish language, culture, and literature. She has over twenty years of teaching experience at higher institutions around the world, including Spain, Switzerland, South Africa, and the United States, where she has taught at the University of Michigan, Dartmouth College, and the Middlebury College Spanish School. She completed her Licenciatura in Spanish Philology at the University of Salamanca, and she holds a Ph.D. in Spanish literature from the University of Geneva, Switzerland. She has published numerous articles and a book on Spanish culture and literature. She is a co-author of Pearson’s Unidos, Identidades, La escritura paso a paso, and earlier editions of Mosaicos, all published by Prentice Hall.

 

Judith E. Liskin-Gasparro is a professor of Spanish at the University of Iowa, where she teaches courses in second language acquisition, pedagogy, and Spanish language. She is the co-director of FLARE (Foreign Language Acquisition Research and Education), which offers an interdisciplinary doctoral program in Second Language Acquisition, and she was formerly the Director of the Elementary and Intermediate Spanish Language Program. Previously, she taught at Middlebury College and worked as a test development consultant at Educational Testing Service. She received her A.B. in Spanish from Bryn Mawr College, her M.A. from Princeton University and her Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin in Foreign Language Education. She has published articles and books on language learning and teaching and has led many workshops for language teachers.She is a co-author of Pearson’s Unidos, Identidades, La escritura paso a paso, and earlier editions of Mosaicos, all published by Prentice Hall.

The relationshipthat the author has with Pearson language labs should be scrutinized very carefully. I
I have been. consistently frustrated by the manner inwhich they approach helping students to learn. Hours are consistently spent working out answers to the exercises. To add to the dilemma is the fact that their resource personnel, in some cases, do not speak Spanish and/or do not have the know how to help students reason out why they have received partially correct responses. This is an abbreviate summation of my problems with the program. If you wish to speak to me further on this product feel free to call me at 201 997 5165.

Everything came great. No problems at all. However, I had returned the rentals back to the address on July 29. It should have arrived on the first of August. I kept getting emails saying I still have to ship my textbook before the deadline. I wanted to check in with that.

Not the best Spanish book

This Spanish book could have been written better. I used this book for Spanish One and my professor was constantly putting it down and pointing out errors in the book. It did help me to learn some basic Spanish, but it definitely wasn't the best.

A good, inexpensive reference work

Reference work and inexpensive are seldom found together when speaking of quality materials on Biblical Hebrew, but Williams' work is well worthy of such a title. This short paperback covers the syntax of nouns, verbs, particles and clauses, discussing the basic syntactical functions of each. The examples, though sometimes unclear, are sufficient, and specific Scripture passages can be referenced with the index provided in the back. Perhaps of greatest practical value in this work is the index of particles and prepositions located on the last page. It is difficult to find a good discussion of particles and prepositions outside of major reference grammars, so this is a welcome addition.

This gem is easy on the wallet, unintimidating and useful. After you've struggled through some Hebrew Bible passages and consulted this and other reference grammars, read this one cover-to-cover and then you'll have an easier time reading the others.

Cheap, Excellent Syntax book

Students of any language will know, its one thing to know the different parts of a language - verbs and nouns, but quite another to put them together.

This great little book does just that, and does it logically with good clear examples, in an often under-studied field.

Syntax is usually left at the end when everyone has learnt all the other pieces and to put them together. However, this approach can mislead one to believe one understands how Hebrew and the language work.

This book teaches by example and shows carefully how a particular part of speech is utilised in the actual text.

It is cheap and is very useful.

I would have given it a five-star rating, but the text-quality is poor, and the Hebrew is sometimes difficult to read in the old-typewriter style of print.

All the Hebrew is translated.

After years of deliberation, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists has recently recommended that routine repeat Cesarean sections should no longer be performed, with only a few exceptions. A little out dated with SOME things, but Great book

Great book all and all. SOME of the things, are a little out dated, like the updates on, yet again, another revision of the ACOG's statement on VBACs. Also, I am against routine IVs and EFMs, the author states that VBAC carries little risk to baby, so my question is, why routine EFM, just because you are a VBAC? Also, according to new studies, a laboring woman burns over 800 calories an hour. If this is the case, a laboring woman will need more than ice chips and juice. Do your research on "routine" procedures, couple that with this book and you are set to go. I also recommend "The Thinking Woman's Guide to a Better Birth". It has the same concept of getting the FACTS across and not so much opinions of individuals.

I had a successful VBAC b/c of this book...

I loved this book! Dr. Bruce Flamm should be given an award for his no nonesense view of VBAC. He is the reason I left my doctor at 6 months pregnant so I could pursue a doctor who didn't want to cut me open just because I had a c-section the last pregnancy!!

You need to buy this book if you are looking to do a VBAC!! It is not as outdated as some would say. It still applies today!

Activities for English Language Learners

As a 6th grade teacher of a Bilingual/Transitional classroom I highly reccommend this book for students who are learning English as a second language. The activities in this book are geared towards helping students develop conversational English skills. A sample activity from the book might be locating items in a library. Students usually work in pairs. Each student will have similar maps of a library in front of them, the only difference is that some items are missing on one map where as the other map has those items and vice-versa. Each student takes turns asking questions and giving directions to locate items or to fill in the missing parts of the map. This of course is done in English. This helps students practice their conversational skills which they will need not only in an academic setting, but in the world at large as well. The author is extremely creative in developing activities that will not only engage the student to practice their fluency in English, but they will have fun as well! This book is appropriate for any age and any setting, academic or personal.

Great for Second Language Learners

This book was recommended to me by one of my lecturers in my MATESL classes. She was taught by Prof. Yorkey and saw this book in action during the initial development by Prof. Yorkey. I used it in Thailand with Assumption University students and had great fun with it. The students enjoyed it and were not timid in playing the games in the book. I can't think of a better book for teaching students to speak regardless of their previous language ability. If you can purchase this book, either new or used, it is worth just about any price. A great teaching tool.

Keeps conversation going

There are many activities to keep conversation going between two students or a student and a tutor. I have successfully used these activities with adult students who have English as a second language. Student A has the "A" page and Student B has the "B" page, and they have to work together to complete the pages, which means they have to speak English to each other. Great book.

About the Author
Russell M. Cummings is a professor of aeronautics at the US Air Force Academy, where he teaches fluid mechanics, aerodynamics, and numerical methods, in addition to computational aerodynamics. Professor Cummings is the coauthor of Aerodynamics for Engineers, 6th edition, and is also professor emeritus of aerospace engineering at California Polytechnic State University. Professor Cummings has specialized in high angle of attack aerodynamics and manoeuvring aircraft simulation for most of his career.

William H. Mason is a professor emeritus of aerospace engineering at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. As a member of the Virginia Tech community since 1989, Mason has advised many undergraduate and graduate students in the aerospace engineering degree program and has served as graduate advisor for twenty-three master's thesis students and nine doctoral students. In addition, he advised numerous undergraduate aircraft-design teams, with nine first-place honors in international design competitions and ten second- or third-place honors. He was the advisor to the Virginia Tech student chapter of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) and to the Design Build Fly Team.

Scott A. Morton is a researcher at the University of Dayton Research Institute and is the principal software developer for the Kestrel Fixed Wing Aircraft Product of the Computational Research and Engineering Acquisition Tools and Environments (CREATE) Program, part of the DoD High Performance Computing Modernization Program Office. He leads a team of thirteen aerodynamicists, structural dynamicists and software engineers in a twelve year project to produce a production quality tool integrating aerodynamics, dynamic stability and control, structures, propulsion, and store and cargo separation into a single simulation on a peta-flop class machine. Dr Morton served as a professor of aeronautics at the US Air Force Academy from 1998 to 2006, at which time he retired from the Air Force at the rank of Lt Colonel. Dr Morton has specialized in the areas of high angle of attack aerodynamics, aeroelasticity, and computational stability and control in his twenty-nine-year career.

David R. McDaniel began his career serving in the US Air Force conducting flight tests to assess the stability and control characteristics of various military aircraft. He later taught aerodynamics and thermodynamics at the US Air Force Academy where he first entered into the world of computational aerodynamics. He worked as a researcher in the Aeronautics Lab at the Academy for several years developing computational techniques for simulating various multidisciplinary problems. Dr McDaniel currently is a Research Associate Professor at the University of Alabama, Birmingham where he works on the Kestrel fixed-wing product development team as part of the CREATE effort managed by the DoD High Performance Computing Modernization Program.

An excellent book for undergraduate/beginner CFD, informative, useful, and perfectly-pitched

I used this as the recommended (not mandatory) text for an introductory, applied (very applied) CFD course at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Several students purchased it and read it avidly - we used it as a general reference for digging a little deeper into the "black box". To be clear, this is a book clearly aimed at those new-ish to CFD and is perfect for the undergraduate taking a course or two in computational aerodynamics as it covers both simpler (and older) techniques as well as what most of us think of as industrial CFD in RANS (and some LES/DES). The descriptions of why things are the way they are are good and accessible, with an appropriate level of mathematical rigor while not being nearly as dense and off-putting as some of the more traditional CFD texts. The wealth of examples are useful for getting students thinking about what their results can look like, and the profiles of CFD researchers and developers is a nice touch that helps personalize some of the big names in CFD and CFD education, as well as showing the diversity of careers possible in CFD even if largely limited to the aerospace industry. It is obviously aimed at the aerospace industry, however a future version may benefit from expanding slightly into some related areas which are really only touched on, as the general content is actually fine for courses that might also be taught in Mechanical and Civil arenas and it wouldn't take too many additional examples to help that feel relevant for wind engineers in general.

Overall I was pleased that the author team took the time to write for their intended audience and not just cram it full of the stuff that seems to be accepted as "the stuff you have to know about CFD", which is often woefully misjudged for students learning about computational aerodynamics for the first time. This is a very substantial book and as the students had already learned about aerodynamics and matlab-able potential flow/lifitng line theory, we skipped the first few chapters but it would be a nice catch-all for approximately 2 or even 3 courses in this area.

I must admit we are fortunate to have plenty of software options available to us and our students, so we did not make use of some of the code/examples that are sprinkled throughout. If teaching CFD to an undergraduate population, I would highly recommend a modest investment in commercial software that is well-documented, with a user-friendly GUI, as the students will find it much easier to get started and get excited, after which they can delve further into the theory and the mechanics of it all - having them flail around feeling like a cold war hacker to solve problems is, in my experience, inauthentic of the industry we're preparing them for, and a sure-fire way to induce boredom and frustration. ANSYS or CD-Adapco, for instance, will often happily provide Formula SAE or AIAA DBF teams with licenses as sponsorship, and several other packages are competitive to the point of now costing less than a decent desktop on which to run them - for universities without established CFD infrastructure and expertise, this is probably the route to go down rather than relying on bits and pieces from the book which, while potentially useful, are probably more of a "bonus" item that would be particularly useful for the student who otherwise has little or no access to resources (which in this day and age means they are somehow sitting around with either a serious conscience or no internet connection...!).

Not as advertised

The book gets 2 stars because it is fairly easy to read. The description is somewhat misleading with respect to software. It advertises open source software, but a few Matlab scripts does not constitute open source software. The other software are trial versions of proprietary programs with preprogrammed examples, i.e. the reader does not have the opportunity to "play" with unique test cases.

I do not recommend if you want to learn about CA

An antidote to hit-and-miss Christmas anthologies

I rarely buy anthologies, precisely because so many of them are hit and miss; for every decent novella by a favourite author, there are two or sometimes three sub-standard stories by writers whose books I would never buy. Occasionally even those stories by favourite authors suffer from anthology-itis: they are too short for good character and plot development.
Here is an excellent idea, however: a collection of Christmas novellas by one of the best authors of the Regency/historical period, Mary Jo Putney. All but one of the novellas are reprints of stories previously published in earlier multiple-author anthologies, but since I hadn't read any of them that wasn't an issue for me. The single new story is a contemporary novella, a sequel to The Spiral Path, Putney's most recent contemporary novel.
A Holiday Fling, the contemporary story, is the first in the collection. Jenny Lyme and Greg Marino were minor characters in The Spiral Path, and we didn't see them interact with each other. In this novella, we discover that they had been lovers more than ten years earlier when working on a movie, but their lives had gone in separate directions. Now Jenny needs Greg's help to save her village's community centre, and so he flies to England to spend Christmas with her. The attraction between them is as strong as ever, and they are unable to stay out of each other's arms. This time, though, is it just another holiday fling, or can they make a future together?
The Christmas Cuckoo is a tale of mistaken identity and belonging. Major Jack Howard has returned from the wars because he has unexpectedly inherited an earldom. Unwilling to comply with his great-aunt the countess's dictates as to how an earl should dress and behave, especially since he knows very well that she resents the fact that he has inherited the title, he jumps on the first stagecoach out of London. En route to its destination, he gets drunk and is mistakenly left behind at a stop... where he is found by a young woman expecting her brother's friend Captain Jack Howard. Meg had high hopes that Captain Jack would fall in love with her sister Phoebe, but finds herself falling in love with Major Jack instead. The mistaken identity ensues since Jack is too drunk to realise that Meg has the wrong Jack Howard, and soon he is in the welcoming warmth of a loving family for the first time in his life. Is it too much to ask to enjoy one happy Christmas?
In Sunshine for Christmas I found a surprise, and very welcome, sequel to The Rake. Ally's former fiancé, and the man who broke her heart and sent her running away from her family, was left lonely and devastated at the end of the book, for he really had loved Ally and he had to live not only with the knowledge that he had lost her through his own fault, but also the guilt of knowing that it was his careless words which had sent her fleeing from her home and into hiding. Miserable and unable to bear the joy of Christmas all around him, Lord Randolph travels to Italy. There, he meets Elizabeth Walker, an unfashionable woman old enough at thirty-something to be considered unmarriageable. Yet she interests him in a way that no-one else has ever before. Can these two lonely people overcome the differences between them to find a future together?
The Christmas Tart is probably the weakest in the collection. Nicole, a French émigrée of good family working as a seamstress is falsely accused of theft by her employer. She is fired, without references, and all her money confiscated. As she contemplates the very few options open to her, she is mistaken for a prostitute by two gentlemen, who buy her as a present for their friend Sir Philip Selbourne. Can Nicole sell herself to survive? Would Philip want a barely-willing sacrifice in any case? What will Nicole do, alone and penniless at Christmas?
Finally, the treat of the anthology is The Black Beast of Belleterre, a Beauty and the Beast fable. James, Lord Falconer, is very ugly. He knows, because his father always told him so, and an accident when he was a child made him even more so. Now that he is an adult and inherited his father's estates, he always wears a hooded cape so that no-one can see him. His neighbour is a gambler and in debt to James. When James hears that Gardsley is about to sell his beautiful daughter to a pox-ridden old man, he offers to take Ariel in cancellation of Gardsley's debt to him. But he cannot bear to allow a young woman as lovely as Ariel to see his ugly face, so he hides himself from her... until Ariel decides that she wants to get to know her husband. Can she get past his scars, mental as well as physical, to make this a marriage of love as well as expediency?
My only complaint about this collection is its price; it's a trade paperback rather than standard size, and thus more expensive. This was bought for me as a surprise, and very welcome, Christmas present, but anyone considering buying it for themselves might want to be sure that they hadn't read any of the novellas before.

In five charming stories, Ms. Putney gives her readers an early Christmas present. The first story is the sole contemporary of the lot, and is a spin off from her previous contemporary release, the SPIRAL PATH. In this one, HOLIDAY FLING, you have the appeal of the old Judy Garland/Mickey Rooney "let's put on a show" theme, though with considerably more steam than the old pictures.
The next four stories are historical. CHRISTMAS CUCKOO mixes romance with a case of mistaken identity with results that are in no ways an error. SUNSHINE FOR CHRISTMAS finds two English folk trapped together in Italy, and love the only way to save a reputation. CHRISTMAS TART gives a young woman who is out of luck a ray of hope when she is saved from a life on the streets by the kindness of a young nobleman. Finally, the best story comes last in BLACK BEAST OF BELLETERRE. A young woman finds herself saved from an unacceptable union to pay off her father's gambling debts by the lord who is said to be a monster incarnate. Yet, she does not find him to be the beast he claims to be at all.
***** All of these touching stories will be a true treat to Ms. Putney's legion of loyal fans everywhere, and perhaps win her new ones, for there is enough variety in the stories to have something for everyone. *****

wonderfully warm holiday collection

"A Holiday Fling". British actress Jenny Lyme tries to save the "Tithe Barn Community Center" by producing a Christmas show for TV. She asks her former lover cinematographer Greg Marino to help. Both fondly remember about the other and want a second chance together.

"The Christmas Cuckoo". Major Jack Howard heads to his aunt for Christmas, but instead ends up slightly drunk at public coach's inn. Meg Lambert goes to the inn to meet her brother's buddy, Captain Jack Howard, only to find him inebriated. The next morning Jack realizes the mistake, but soberly finds he desires Meg.

"Sunshine for Christmas". Randolph Lennox goes to Italy to escape the loneliness of Britain. However, Naples remains as cold as his heart until he meets Elizabeth Walker whose fluent Italian helps him with a problem. As they tour together, they fall in love, but what happens after Italy?

"The Christmas Tart". Her employer accuses seamstress Nicole Chambord of robbery and fires her. Sir Philip Selbourne settles his late father's estate. His friends decide Nicole could cheer him up but he believes this innocent gift is worth more than just a one-night stand.

"The Black Beast of Belleterre." Baron James Markland wears a cloak to hide his hideous visage. He visits Sir Edwin Hawthorne, whose estate is in ruin due to gambling debts. Sir Edwin plans to sell his daughter Ariel to a lecher, but James buys her instead, promising a marriage in name only. However, Ariel wants a real relationship with her cloaked spouse.
