This book was delayed for a few weeks to allow us to incorporate detailed information on the changes made to the camera's menu system and extra features added by the firmware updates 2.0 and 3.0. It provides information on all the camera's features, including the brand new ones introduced during the October 2014 and February 2015 camera updates.

About the Author
Darrell Young (aka Digital Darrell) is a full-time author and professional photographer in the East Tennessee, USA area. He is a member of Professional Photographers of America, the North American Nature Photography Association, and Nikon Professional Services--and adheres to the ethical guidelines of those fine organizations. Darrell has been photographing people, events, and places professionally for over 30 years, with a special interest in natural history.

His mother gave him a Brownie Hawkeye camera in 1968 at the young age of 10 years and awakened a lifelong interest in capturing slices of time. Living in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains--near Great Smoky Mountains and the Blue Ridge Parkway--has given him a real concern for the natural environment and a deep interest in nature photography. You'll often find Darrell standing behind a tripod in the beautiful mountains of Tennessee and North Carolina.

Since about 2000 Darrell has been an active blogger and article writer on photographic subjects. In 2008 his first photography book was published and, since then, he has authored over a dozen books on the technical side of photography, with a special interest in helping new photographers fully understand their complex cameras so they can use them for more effective and enjoyable photography.

Highly recommend this book!

I am fairly familiar with my EM-1 which I have owned for over a year now. I have read a number of other instructional manuals for other cameras over the years. After being one of the first people to purchase Darrell's "Mastering the Olympus OM-D EM-1" I have had some time to scan through a good portion of the book and focused on several specific things I wanted to learn more about - like HDR and IS settings for manual lenses. Without a doubt the information provided in this book will take me to a whole new level in understanding the myriad of capabilities of this awesome mirror-less camera. Darrell not only identifies "how" to navigate the various menu functions and operate the various buttons but he also explains "why" and provides recommendations for settings that might be most beneficial. The method of portraying all of this information is laid out in a very logical format that is easy to follow and understand in layman's terms. I bought the e-version PDF file so it is easy for me to search on specific things and keep clicking where the word pops up to capture everything about it. I pre-ordered the paperback version too.

I am just scratching the surface for what I have had time to read but after scanning through it I'm very anxious to absorb as much of this as possible. I also ride motorcycles and have for years. I know all the mechanical and operational aspects of my motorcycles so I can enjoy my rides by paying attention to traffic and scenery without stumbling over the controls. I want to be able to operate my EM-1 just the same way so I can visualize and plan my pictures without fumbling around with the operation of the camera. I also own an EM-5 so a lot of what is included in this book will apply to the operation of that camera too. Although this is just a hobby for me I've always believed that investing in the best equipment and taking time to learn all about it will result in the best outcomes. We can all improve no matter what level of photographer we are - and anyone reading this book will definitely improve in their photographic capabilities with the EM-1.

Excellent guide book--for the Newbie and for the Semi-Pro

I've been making pictures for going on thirty years with Canons, Nikons, and Contaxs, images good enough to have sold many large prints and had hundreds published in books and magazines. But the Oly menu system is complicated and like learning a new language. As well, this camera has a myriad of overlapping and confusing settings and capabilities. I used a couple of excellent on-line sites to get some basic settings and to get questions answered, but still felt as if I were just brushing the surface and not getting explanations about why this setting rather than that setting nor expanding my use of unfamiliar tools. This book has gone a very long way in expanding my understanding and daily use of the EM1. It is an especially well-written book, loaded with suggestions for optimal settings, and truly comprehensive. And the author's love of this camera comes through loud and clear. My bookshelves are sagging from all the photography books I own--among the dozen or so manuals, this may be the best. Highly recommended for anyone who owns and wants to fulfill the potential of this complicated camera.

Best 'Mastering' book for a camera I've read - and this is a camera that has a lot of subtle capabilities

I am a Nikon (land based) photographer and have seen, skimmed and purchased a number of books on camera operation thru the years. Manuals that come with these fabulous cameras are woefully inadequate, sometimes they are worse than no manual. This is my first Olympus camera and I plan to use it underwater. Darrell Young's book Mastering the OM-D E-M1 stands out from the crowd in its comprehensiveness and clarity.

To get the value from this camera one must learn how to configure it for easy access to its capabilities without using the touch screen! I am a pretty advanced camera user ( highly skilled but not professional) and can usually pick up a camera and figure out most of the basic stuff without much challenge. Same for this camera, however to use the camera for my intent requires accessing the advanced features, configuring buttons and levers, all without using the touch screen. Thanks to this book I've shortened my learning curve and then some. This book has exceeded my expectations! One other note - rather than re-state the things that ARE in the manual, this book (e version) provides links to the appropriate tables and content

An Excellent Range of Voices and Cultures

Jessica Hagedorn has put together a mostly impressive collection of short stories and a few novel excerpts written by Asian Americans. From well-known names to lesser known talents, this anthology covers the wide terrain of both stylistic approaches and Asian cultures. Its writers can claim heritages from Vietnam, India, the Philippines, China, Taiwan, Japan, Cambodia, and Korea. Some stories, such as Peter Ho Davies's "The Hull Case," have little, if anything, to do with Asian culture, but most have stronger connections to cultural uniqueness. Sarah Chin's "Red Wall" follows a Chinese-American narrator as she explores the faces of China as the member of a documentary film crew. Bharati Mukherjee, in her well-known and powerful story "The Management of Grief," explores the impact on the Canadian-Indian community of a plane crash in India that kills their loved ones. Ka Vang's "Ms. Pac-Man Ruined My Gang Life" tells of a Hmong member of a girl-gang who is forced by her home-girls to exact revenge on a Puerto Rican girl. Gish Jen's strong "Who's Irish?" is movingly told in broken but lucid English by a Chinese woman who doesn't like the wildness in her half-Irish granddaughter. Some of my favorite writers are included here: Chang-Rae Lee, Ruth Ozeki, Akhil Sharma, Mukherjee, Jhumpa Lahiri, Monique Truong. However, many of these forty-two writers were unknown to me before I read their stories, and I'm grateful Hagedorn introduced me to their work.
While some of these stories fall short of succeeding, all are well-written. The range in voices gives the reader a sense of the variety of the cultures and their individual members. I recommend this for readers of international fiction as well as Asian-Americans who long for writers who speak to their culture. This would make an excellent textbook for high school and college level courses that explore non-Western contemporary literature.

Asian American Experience Through Literature

Jessica Hagedorn's second installment of the Asian American experience, CHARLIE CHAN IS DEAD 2: AT HOME WITH THE WORLD comprises of a diverse group of provocative Asian American fictional writers who share their inspiring stories. These writers are third-fifth generation Asian Americans who were either born or immigrated to the United States during the late 1950s and 1960s and lived their formative years during the 1970s and 1980s influenced by American material and popular culture, which is a significance distinction that defines their identity. This factor captures the essence of American and Asian culture, which embodies an eclectic marriage to large proportions. All the writers and their essays have merits of their own. However, it is their storytelling that reveals a shared intimacy and complexity, which forms this shared experience. The subtitle of the book is quite fitting because it best describes "home" within this diaspora of writers.

CHARLIE CHAN IS DEAD 2 is rich with Asian American culture. The dialogue and dialects reveal the various voices and faces, which journey beyond US boundaries. The essays in this collection are graphically detailed with metaphors that relate to religion, family, and Asian cuisine. These writers embrace their culture with the voices they provide for the characters they present. The writers jokingly confront stereotypes and acknowledge and understand that it is a part of their identity. The stories speak of the present but resonate with the past struggles Asian Americans have had to experience in the United States.

The essays in CHARLIE CHAN IS DEAD 2 offer a fresh mix of Asian American voices that may appeal to a younger group of readers preferably at the high school and college level. However, it is not limited to anyone interested in literature of any genre. The most helpful aspect of this volume is its bibliographical listing at the end of the book, which may encourage first-time readers of Asian American literature to read on. On a suggested note: Read Hagedorn's first edition, CHARLIE CHAN IS DEAD: AN ANTHOLOGY OF CONTEMPORARY ASIAN AMERICAN FICTION first in order to understand the progression of the Asian American literature experience.

You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll recognize facets of your own life

Great collection of short stories by many different writers. Each story has its own mood, setting, and way of interacting with characters that is inherently part of a specific culture. I had to buy this for a college course but ended up reading more than what my professor assigned. Also, I really felt a connection with a few of the stories. They told of experiences I could really relate to.

Daughter is a huge Dan and Phil fan and was, of course, very excited to get it and happy with the book and its content. However, we were at Target yesterday afternoon and it was already on the shelves the day before it was supposed to go on sale. It makes me hesitant to preorder a book again from Amazon if I can get it in stores a day early.

You can't afford not to

Doug Fields has written a short, to-the-point, practical yet reflective book on why learning to say, "No", and then practicing saying it, is essential to staying healthy in a ministry leadership position. Although Fields is a youth minister and writes with youth ministers as his primary audience, this book applies to anyone in ministry--paid or unpaid, full-time, part-time, or volunteer.

Early on he writes, "I want to challenge you to say no more often so you can say yes to what matters most" (18). He develops this idea throughout the rest of the book. For those who may be in too deep and not know how to recognize it, Fields points out some warning signs that can help you discern if you're addicted to busyness, or if you're putting doing ministry above loving God (for example, consistently counting the time you spend preparing a talk or small group lesson as your own personal devotional time) . Having pointed out some signs, he also talks about practical action steps you can take to bring things back under control.

Jesus said, "Apart from me you can do nothing" (John 15:5). The temptation is always there for the minister to do more, be more, accomplish more, and say "yes" more. Yet as you do this, you risk damaging your first love: your relationship with Christ. Fields's short book is a call back to that first love with a clear escape route from any busyness, overworking, or people-pleasing that may have entrapped you.

Say Yes To This Book

In What Matters Most, Doug Fields says, "You need to learn to say no to many good things and wonderful people so you'll have space to say yes to God, yes to the important people in your life [like your family and friends:], yes to priorities - yes to what matters most" (p. 21).

What does matter most to you?
I think that's why I like Fields' book so much. He doesn't presume to know what your top priorities are, because they are different for everyone. Fields offers helpful questions and thoughts to get to the heart of what matters to you. Once that's clarified, Fields offers practical ideas for making certain those things are not pushed out of your life by other people or tasks.

*note: In my opinion, the book which unpacks out this topic a little more fully is Choosing to Cheat by Andy Stanley.

Doug Fields is alway great but this is already covered in his other books. It is good material and a neat little booklet but costly for its size. Could have been a booklet sold for a couple bucks.

Awesome collection of scary stories!

I first read this book when I bought it in the 5th grade from those catalogs we use to get in school for the scholastic book fairs (remember those). It totally blew me away!
Comparable to such masters of young horror as Alvin Schwarz or RL Stine. Easy reading and very entertaining for kids! If you have a kid between the ages of 9 and 14 who loves scary stories this is a perfect book for them, as well as the rest of J.B. Stampers Tales for the Midnight Hour Collections and the Night Frights Collections.

Some tales of this book include The Gecko: story of a man who releases a pet gecko in his apartment but soon realizes to his horror that it is no ordinary gecko! Voices: story of a girl who's best friend has been hearing voices that predict things to come! Other great stories too!
This book is out of print though so it may be a bit harder to get but it is possible to pick up a copy online for around or under 5 bucks. Definately check out the other collections I mentioned, you won't be disappointed!

Even More Chillers for Young Readers

This collection of scary stories appeals mostly to the very young reader. Each story is quite short and simple. The typical story has a short build-up with a simple shock ending like "there was a skeleton at the door." Stories lack the resolutions older or more accomplished readers will want but for the style they are really rather entertaining.

The stories range widely in their focus. The reader meets monsters, vampires, witches, bad fortunes and all manner of scary thing.

This is the fourth in a series. It has also been collected with the third volume (STILL MORE TALES FOR THE MIDNIGHT HOUR) in another book called TALES FOR THE MIDNIGHT HOUR, VOLUME TWO (ISBN 0-7607-6776-9).

I always enjoyed the "Tales For The Midnight Hour" series and didn't know there was a forth one until I was browsing around. I was a kid when I enjoyed them and I am an adult now, so I decided to get this one so I can one day read them to my kids too while camping in the back yard!

almost too fun for a stats book

The authors make regression not only interesting but fairly painless. This is the clearest stats book ever. It even explained concepts from lower level stats classes so that they made more sense. Examples actually clarified material as well! All stats books should be written like this.

Know your statistical software! or don't bother

Simple and clear at the outset, it soon dives into applications where the conclusions made are unclear, particularly because it uses formulas keyed to software I'm unfamiliar with. A thorough course in regression and correlation should be announced as a prerequisite. The word "Applying" in the title is a warning.

This book has helped me understand regression better. I bought the impulsively, but it was worth every penny. Yes, I would recommend this to people interested in conducting quantitative research in which they are trying to predict an outcome from any number of variables.
