Victoria Pynchon is an attorney-mediator with ADR Services, Inc. in Century City and an arbitrator with the American Arbitration Association in Los Angeles, California. She is the co-founder of She Negotiates Consulting and Training, a negotiation training and consulting service for women professionals, executives, managers and entrepreneurs. Victoria received her LL.M degree in Dispute Resolution in 2006. Her second book, Success as a Mediator for Dummies, was published by Wiley in April, 2012. Victoria lives in Los Angeles with her husband, attorney Stephen Goldberg.

Profoundly insightful and hilarious.

Victoria Pynchon has written one of those rare books that make you laugh and cry, shake and nod your head, and - most importantly - stop and ponder, all in the same chapter. This is not your run-of-the-mill book on negotiation and conflict resolution strategies. Rather, you'll find a familiar cast of characters, including the bully, the hero, and the victim, along with a description of what makes these folks tick, how they interact with us, and how we interact with them. What I found especially thought provoking was Victoria's insight that a bully, for example, does not exist in a vacuum - he needs someone to be a bully to (that would be us). Hence, a bully is not just a bad guy but a relationship in crisis. When viewed in this light, avenues to transform that relationship open up.

Victoria's humor, heart, and sophisticated prose make The Grownups' ABCs of Conflict Resolution a refreshingly different reading experience. This book will make you look at conflict differently. And that's exactly what we need for conflict resolution to take place.

Not to be missed SF classic

It sounds like a story you've heard before: great alien masters descend on Earth and take control of the world, ushering in a golden age that may be cleverly disguised creative slavery. But Clarke's legendary novel (equal to _Rendezvous with Rama_ and _2001: A Space Odyssey_ in fame) isn't about a human rebellion against alien overlords, but the evolution of humanity into its next stage, and the ultimate dwarfing power of the unknowable order of the cosmos. The narrative glides between different characters and different eons, occasionally with a seeming clumsiness that turns out to be purposeful plotting devices. The pay-off is sublime science-fiction poetry that shows the genre's power to transcend human drama and fly into the infinite. The sheer scope of its conclusions leaves the reader wiser and sadder, the sign of a superb novel.

Profound statement on humanity's role in the Universe

Author Arthur Charles Clarke is renowned as one of the greatest science fiction writers of all time. His "2001: A Space Odyssey", written with and filmed by Stanley Kubrick, is viewed as one of the seminal works in science fiction history. Obviously, Clarke didn't make his career out of one single book (and movie). He has been quite a prodigious, and proficient, writer. In addition to writing three sequels to the "2001" saga, he also wrote the best-selling "Rama" series, numerous single novels like "Hammer of God" and "Songs of Distant Earth", and untold numbers of short stories. His stories have won just about every conceivable award for this genre and have achieved the dual goal of garnering critical praise and popular approval. Of all his novels, though, it may be one of his earliest that still stands as his best.

"Childhood's End" was first published in 1953, a time when the cold war was in full form and people were beginning to truly look towards the stars for other life and possibilities for exploration. "Childhood's End" tapped into that fertile imagination to craft a story of profound scale and meaning. It begins one day when numerous spaceships suddenly appear in the sky above Earth. They are flown by an alien species referred to as the Overlords. The purpose of their journey to third planet of the Solar System is subject to much speculation and fear. These aliens seem to be a benevolent race that only wants to help humanity solve the problems that plague it. In fifty years, these Overlords will end ignorance, poverty, war, and disease. To what end do they do this, though? The absence of any obstacles and struggles renders humanity complacent and inert. Is this designed to make Earth pliable for invasion, or is there a greater, more benevolent purpose behind these actions by the Overlords?

"Childhood's End" is an appropriate title as it references the end of humanity's childhood. The Overlords are on a quest to condition the people of Earth for it's new role in the order of the Universe. Current humanity will not be able to handle what is asked of them, but through the generations they can be evolved to be prepared to take their next step. "Childhood's End", in the space of a mere 224 pages tells the stories of the different steps of this evolution in an episodic manner that is rich in detail and profound in meaning. Clarke is fascinated by the potentials of human destiny. Sometimes, as with "Light of Other Days", he is not as successful in realizing that destiny as he is in other stories. "Childhood's End", though, extraordinarily realizes what humanity can become and its importance to strive towards that. "Childhood's End" is as relevant and compelling and novel in 2003 as it was in 1953.

great science fiction

I was strictly a dabbler in science fiction, until this book grabbed me and pulled me in. To this day, it ranks as my favourite in the genre.
The Overlords appear one day over every city on Earth, and with little resistance, mankind submits to the technologically superior race. After all, their demands are entirely benevolent; they seem to want no more than to end war, poverty, and the other evils that have always plagued the Earth. But why? Through three generations, a few people endeavour to find out.
What they finally learn is something they never imagined: mankind's terrible and wonderful final destiny, and the part the mysterious Overlords are fated to play in achieving it.
Many of Clarke's novels are somewhat lacking in character development, and though Childhood's End is not an extreme example of this tendency, some fairly important characters are only half-formed. In some books, this is a flaw, but when Clarke is truly in his element, the vagueness of the characters seems to work in the story's favour. Here, particularly, I found myself getting quite attached to characters it seemed I barely knew (including some of the enigmatic aliens).
One feature I particularly liked in this book was the glimpse of the Overlords' home world, a tour of wonders that Clarke knows better than to try and explain in terms of known science, at least not with any detail. If anything, the mystery of it all makes the story-- and the Overlords-- seem more real.
The ending, though inspiring from a certain angle, can be a downer in terms of the characters you come to know and like, no matter where your sympthies end up lying. Mine, in the end, fall with Karellen, the Overlord supervisor, who, like the other Overlord characters, manages to be thoroughly believable despite the fact that his background and motivations remain more or less a mystery.
Science fiction is often infused with philosophy; this book pulls off the mixture better than any other I've read.

To really understand Black-Scholes, read this book

It helps to have courses in calculus and statistics, but all you really need to understand the math in this book is a good grounding in trigonometry (exponentials, logarhythms, and binomial series). My goal was to understand N[d], a.k.a. the area under the normal distribution representing volatility. Not only is this explained well, but I learned much more about the market. Great book!

excellent intuitive exposition of complex subjects

Neil Chriss' book, "Black-Scholes and Beyond" is the first book that I have found that clearly presents the fundamental thinking behind the Black-Scholes formula and all of the underpinning assumptions. I have looked long and hard for a book that can present to an interested and mathematically-adept reader a clear picture of the origin of the BS-formula. Books like Hull are poorly written and confusing to the uninitiated. Chriss, however, presents a logical case for the derivation of the BS-formula which has left me with an understanding of its ingredients and limitations. To flesh-out the BS limitations, Chriss presents 6 chapters on pricing options on Binomial Trees. Chriss' exposition presents trees as an alternative and powerful tool for the valuation of European, American, and exotic options. Trees are treated as a superset of tools to Black-Scholes and moreover as field of their own. The extensive bibliography has helped me track down journal articles on various related subjects so that I can further study the material.
Chriss presents a wealth of intuitive explanations to pricing options - explanations that help the reader gain a greater understanding of the limitations and problems that the current methods face. Often it is hard to find a text that presents in detail the shortcomings of a method or technique, but as any researcher would know, understanding the current limitations is fundamental to advancing the state-of-the-art. In this respect, Chriss goes way beyond any textbook available today.
The reader will find detailed explanations on how to use the BS formula and how to build binomial trees. Additionally, there is extensive material on how to build implied binomial trees and implied volatility trees. I have taken the time to write code to reproduce the material in the chapters and thus far I have had little difficulty, although the last couple of chapters could use a bit of augmentation. Nonetheless, I've read this book twice.
Chriss has done an outstanding job at presenting the material. I look forward to future revisions of this current book and to additional books that I hope he will write. Chriss has created a new standard in financial texts that I hope others adhere to.

About the Author

Joseph Romm, Ph.D., is one of the country's most influential communicators on climate science and solutions. He is the founding editor of Climate Progress, which New York Times columnist Tom Friedman called "the indispensable blog." In 2009, Rolling Stone put Romm on its list of 100 "people who are reinventing America." Romm was acting assistant secretary of energy in 1997, where he oversaw $1 billion in low-carbon technology development and deployment. He is a Senior Fellow at American Progress and holds a Ph.D. in physics from MIT.

Brilliant Answers, Clearly Stated, to Essential Questions addressing the existential threat of Climate Change

Joseph Romm, scientist (PhD, MIT), prolific author, recognized expert on valuable clean energy solutions to deal with climate destabilization, and founder of the highly respected blog, ClimateProgress.org, has performed an admirable public service in his new book, Climate Change: What Everyone Needs to Know. There is no lack of climate information - most of it accessible on the Web, including the massive, multi-volume, several thousand pages of the InterGovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)'s Fifth Assessment Report (which gets read by very few citizens, and nor totally read by nearly all scientists, scholars, officials, advocates, or media reporters). Yet, because of the dis-information campaigns funded by fossil fuel interests, most people hear misinformation being reported by the media, and equally as bad, most media hardly ever cover climate destabilization, and when they do cover, they frequently report incorrectly. Yet, as Joe Romm emphasizes, "Climate change is now an existential issue for humanity. Since everyone’s family will be affected by climate change— indeed, they already are— everyone needs to know the basics about it, regardless of their politics. Many of the major decisions that you, your family, and friends will have to make in the coming years and decades will be affected by human-caused climate change."
Joe wrote this book to help you understand the risks of and resolutions to climate destabilization, while saving you immense time having to track down this knowledge. Within 100 questions Joe covers the gamut. Romm includes both the state of knowledge, which has witnessed rapid insights and new news in just the past 36 months, as well as a new piece of information yet to get proper attention: "Also, this is the first book to examine one of the most important climate questions of all: “Does carbon dioxide at exposure levels expected this century have any direct impacts on human health or cognition?”
I find Joe's engaging writing style a real asset, which avoids unnecessary academic verbiage, or experts' technical jargon, or political grandstanding that has gripped so many politicians. This book is for any and all citizens to read, discuss, share, and seize opportunities. It is so highly informative it is worthy of being an integrated curriculum guidebook for educational classes of all levels, serving as a rich go-to reference book. I certainly hope many CEOs and public leaders of all persuasions make use of Romm's book, learn how they can play important and immediate roles, and encourage their staff and customers to pick up the book.

The best overview of what climate change is, what harm it causes and will cause, and what must be done to stop it

From following Joe Romm's blog since 2010 I was aware that he is on top of the developing research on climate change and able to explain clearly not only the current scientific understanding of global warming but its implications in terms of our future lives. Since I have been following his blog, along with about fourteen other ones, when I had time, I wasn't sure how much I would get from reading the book. But I am impressed by how much ground he covers, backed by references to current research, and how clearly and methodically he answers the questions he poses.

I found that, although I was familiar with much of the research in a general sense, it was not only helpful to have all of the information in one place, but that some of the specific details he mentions were new to me. Romm doesn't attempt to answer all of the questions about the history of climate change before humans overrode the natural cycle that moved us in and out of ice ages, a disruption reversing the gradual cooling over the last 7000 years until the Industrial Revolution--and particularly the last forty years--when human emissions of greenhouse gasses abruptly sent temperatures upward and presently are taking into global temperatures higher than any during the 11,000 years of remarkably stable temperatures that first permitted the creation of civilizations, industry, and agriculture. That's because his primary concern is to inform readers what is happening now, what will happen going forward, and what we can and should do about it.

I believe this is the most informed book on the subject of climate change that is aimed at a general readership with the intent of presenting an accurate picture of what the scientific community presently knows about global warming and how the climate changes it is bringing about will affect them. Romm's take-home message is that we have a lot of work to do, and if we hope to preserve a world and a way of life that has anything like the stability and security that our present one offers, the time is getting short for us to act effectively and affordably. The good news is that while stopping global warming is a huge task that involves worldwide cooperation, it is very affordable; the bad news is that doing nothing will rapidly transform our world into one with more extreme climates where the dry regions got dryer and the wet ones wetter, all of them warmer, but with less predictable, more violent weather and abrupt shifts of hot and cold temperatures, changes that would increase social unrest and violence, endanger health, cause large extinctions of animal and plant life on land and seas, raise ocean levels that would put many cities at risk, increase crop failures in a world of a rapidly rising population, and on and on. Given the enormity of the changes our world is threatened with, it is essential that everyone becomes well informed of the situation and the choices we are offered.

The book delivers on its title

Thorough, authoritative, and up-to-date: Romm discusses events and studies from 2015. The latest news is quite sobering: the world's in considerably worse shape than I (and, I suspect, most laypeople) had thought. At this point, Romm persuasively argues, we can't fully stop man-made global warming or avoid some of its imminent awful effects, which will likely last for hundreds if not thousands of years, and arrive a lot sooner than climatologists had, until recently, been predicting. The best we can hope for, if we take immediate action, is to stave off utter catastrophe. The "Climate Change and You" section is a real eye-opener; Romm offers advice both both about how you can reduce your carbon footprint and how climate change will affect you. (Are you planning to retire or relocate in the next decade or two? Don't move to the Southwest or a coast.)

About the Author

C. Ronald Huff is Dean of the School of Social Ecology and Professor of Criminology, Law and Society as well as Sociology at the University of California, Irvine. He is a Fellow and Past-President of the American Society of Criminology and the author of numerous scholarly articles and 12 books, including Convicted but Innocent: Wrongful Conviction and Public Policy.

Martin Killias is Professor of Criminal Law and Criminology at the Universities of Zurich and Lausanne, and a part-time Judge in the Federal Supreme Court of Switzerland. He received the Sellin-Glueck Award of the American Society of Criminology in 2001. He has been the first President of the European Society of Criminology, co-founder of the International Crime Victim Surveys, and Chair of the European Sourcebook of Crime and Criminal Justice Statistics.

Frank Davey
Born in Vancouver, Frank Davey attended the University of British Columbia where he was a co-founder of the avant-garde poetry magazine TISH. Since 1963, he has been the editor-publisher of the poetics journal Open Letter. In addition, he co-founded the world’s first on-line literary magazine, SwiftCurrent in 1984. Davey writes with a unique panache as he examines with humour and irony the ambiguous play of signs in contemporary culture, the popular stories that lie behind it, and the struggles between different identity-based groups in our globalizing society—racial, regional, gender-based, ethnic, economic—that drive this play.

Like the SmarterComic The Long Tail, I'll keep this short and sweet. I really enjoyed the format and presentation of The Long Tail that SmarterComics has delivered. I would recommend this for anyone that has heard about The Long Tail and would like a quick introduction but isn't ready to invest the time in reading the full book. It is also good for people who have read The Long Tail but would like a little refresher.

I read in another review somewhere that this is for people who don't like reading. I don't subscribe to that theory. There are just some topics that I don't need to read 300 pages on.

I love how this comic puts the book into basic visual information for the person who is a visual learner. I have checked out some of their other publications and loved that they were great for my son to learn some lessons.

Pretty obvious stuff

Meh. A two paragraph concept stretched into a book. And it's not exactly earth-shattering stuff.

Essentially, digital retailers with no overhead costs other than hard drive space can make a lot of money selling tons of unpopular stuff, as well as selling popular stuff because there's almost no cost associated with the additional "inventory".
