This story is extremely sad but it is very engaging and it engages the topic of French responsibility for the atrocious events that occurred during the German occupation. I would definitely recommend it

La Rafle du Vél d'Hiv comes alive!

I'm here in Paris for the summer for an NEH Seminar entitled Visions of the Dark Years: World War II and its legacy in France, and I'm doing a project on the "rafle du Vel d'Hiv"- the massive round-up of Jews that took place in Paris on July 16th, 1942. I purchased this book in French at the bookstore at Le Memorial de la Shoah, not knowing that it had been translated from English. The story is haunting, and interesting, as we follow it in flashbacks. I am doing an annotated bibliography of books on the subject for my seminar project. This story will appeal to my younger students, teaching them at the same time of this shameful episode of French collaboration with the German occupiers, under the Vichy government. France was the only occupied European country to pass its own laws regarding Jews, which were even stricter than those of the Third Reich. By looking the other way,and pretending not to know where the Jews were being transported after the local French camps at Drancy and Pithiviers (they were immediately transported to Auschwitz) some 9,000 French police catalogued and arrested over 13,000 French and foreign Jews residing in France, and sent them to the Velodrome d'Hiver, a large stadium in Paris. This is a shameful episode in French history, retold in a poignant and gripping fashion.

Holy Four Alarm Fire Batman!
I think I just read the hottest thing to creep onto my eReader in a good while. And believe me, I've read some yummy little tales lately. Make Me absolutely knocked my socks off. *I could totally segue that last statement into a lewd comment but I'll keep my inner 16 year old at bay ;)*

Tyler's character is so delightfully filthy with his words. Mix that with Brandon's sweet disposition and it's just a firework ready to go off.
Maisie is a lucky lady.

I, personally, would qualify this is erotic romance, because there is a relationship that reaches beyond sex. I know others might disagree and mark it as strictly erotica due to the sexual content (F/M,M/M, M/M/F) and frequency of such scenes. But whatever you want to classify Make Me under I don't care, because it was hot and made my day/night and probably tomorrow :)

Charlotte Stein has just redefined "hot" for me. Again. I beg her to never, ever write scat. Ever.

As with all other books I've read by Ms. Stein, I loved the language, the characters, the story. I've never met these people on the pages of someone else's book. The world, the tone, the dynamic... all unique -- the kind of unique I've found to be a hallmark of Ms. Stein's work.

If you consider yourself open-minded, I'd recommend this book to you. If you want more of the sort of stories you've grown comfortable with, you're in the wrong place.

Patterns and Variations for Rhythm Guitar

Nice book which includes a CD. It's focus appears to be helping one sort out rhythmic patterns for various Brazilian styles. However, there is no tab whatsoever in this book, contrary to a couple of the other reviews. There's only some simple chord diagrams. This is fine for simply focusing on the rhythm w/out having to worry about reading the music. But in most of the complete songs, you'll have to read notation.

The organization of this book is very simple and very effective- Chapters on Samba, Bossa, Choro, Frevo, and Baiao, each with rhythm pattern examples and variations, then song, accompaniment, and chord/melody examples.
What makes it stand out is that the examples are well-chosen, and seem relevant even before context is introduced.
While the material doesn't require virtuoso level playing, it's not a beginner book- the examples do require reading ability, and some of the rhythms will need to be worked out at a slower tempo, and sped up gradually.
One gets the impression that the author is steeped in the subject matter, and the book is informed by considerable experience-no Dick Louden 'how-to' book- It's the real deal, and well worth the price and the time it will take to work through it methodically.

Thoroughly entertaining. You'll laugh out loud!

If you're from a small town, you'll recognize and appreciate a lot of real-life humor in Ms. Crusie's delightful novel. Even if you've never traveled far from a major metropolitan area, Maddy is a character worth reading about and her world will entertain you. Treat yourself to this book. It's worth the money and the time invested.
This was actually the first book I'd read by the author. I'm so glad I picked it up. [Admittedly, the feet sticking up out of the convertible on the cover drew my attention at first.] I've since located and enjoyed all of the author's books [through Amazon's Auctions & zShops, since many were hard to find]. If you love cats &/or dogs there's an added bonus in Ms. Crusie's work. She portrays animals in her books with warmth, humor, and individuality that's equal to her enjoyable human characters.

What a hilarious uptake on a small town life!

As some of my online friends know, I am from Ohio and I eagerly read any books by a Buckeye native ~~ this is the fourth book I've read by Jennifer Cruise and I love it.
I have to admit, it took me awhile to get into the book ~~ but once I did, it snared me into a hilarious story.
Maddie has it all ~~ a perfect marriage, an adorable daughter and a good reputation in her hometown that she has lived in all her life. Then one day, she finds a pair of black lace panties in her husband's car and her perfect life begins to unravel. A former lover comes back into her life and turns everything upside down ~~ there's murder, intrigue, good home-cooked meals and everything a reader loves to read ~~ suspense, great sexy scenes and funny dialogue.
If you're going to the lake for a day and need a book to while away the time, I highly recommend this book. It's not a deep, thought-provoking book, but it's a great escapism book and fun to read. You won't regret reading Jennifer Cruise's first novel. Just like her other books, it's saucy and fun to read. Have fun!

A Funny Romance

This is the first book that I've read by Jennifer Crusie. It is an easy going, entertaining novel that is a love story of sorts.
Maddie is the good girl of the small town who lives her life for everyone else. When she finds out that her husband is cheating on her again, she decides to get even! After a wild romp with C.L., a guy she once dated in high school, things begin to unravel and tongues begin to wag in Frog Point. It is definitely a scathing look at the character of people in a small town and the stigma of family ties. Everyone is concerned with everyone elses business.
The book is a light read with some mystery, funny dialogue, and some sexy scenes. The only thing I didn't really enjoy in the book was the daughter Emily who was only supposed to be eight years old...her thoughts and actions seemed to reflect someone much older than that.
A good fun read though overall.
