About the Author

Janice Loudon, PhD, is an associate professor in the department of physical therapy and rehabilitation science at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City. She teaches courses in applied kinesiology and biomechanics, applied musculoskeletal anatomy, evaluation methods, and principles of treatment of musculoskeletal disorders, health promotion, and musculoskeletal rehabilitation.

Loudon is a licensed physical therapist and licensed athletic trainer in Missouri and Kansas, an athletic trainer certified by the National Athletic Trainers' Association, and a sport specialist certified by the American Physical Therapy Association. In January 2002 she completed a mentorship program with the Kaiser Hayward physical therapy residency in advanced orthopedic manual therapy. Loudon is also a certified manual therapist; she completed the level 1 residency program in manual therapy at the Ola Grimsby Institute in 1997.

As an author and researcher, Loudon has produced more than 40 publications as well as the first edition of The Clinical Orthopedic Assessment Guide. She serves as a reviewer for several journals and is a member of the editorial board for Journal of Athletic Training, Journal of Sport Rehabilitation, and the Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy.

Loudon is a member of the American Physical Therapy Association, the National Athletic Trainers' Association, and the National Strength and Conditioning Association. She lives in Overland Park, Kansas, and enjoys jogging, biking, and golfing.

Stephania Bell, MS, PT, is a clinical assistant professor in physical therapy education at the University of Kansas Medical Center. Bell teaches advanced orthopedics and provides clinical services at the medical center's Sports Medicine Institute. In 1997, she completed a two-year program leading to certification in orthopedic manual therapy through the Ola Grimsby Institute. Bell is a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapists and the American Physical Therapy Association.

Marcie Swift, PhD, is a clinical assistant professor in the department of physical therapy and rehabilitation sciences at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City. Swift received her PhD in rehabilitation science from the University of Kansas Medical Center in 2007. She has also completed both a fellowship program and a mentorship program in orthopedic manual physical therapy at the Kaiser Permanente physical therapy residency in advanced orthopedic manual therapy.

In addition to her academic and clinical responsibilities, Swift teaches courses in musculoskeletal physical therapy and applied musculoskeletal anatomy.

good quick reference but could have some changes

This book is great to reference on how to perform joint mobs and special tests. There are some inconsistencies and a few errors that I have found throughout the book, and I wish there were better anatomy pictures. Great tables for a quick reference of clinical syndromes and muscle action, innervation, origin and insertions. Overall a good book to have especially while you're in school.

I ordered a used copy and received a brand new one!!

Human Kinetics has put together another great book. I needed an assessment book to help me understand about muscle dysfunctions as I work towards gaining my massage license.

Chapters include: Joint basics, range of motions, physiological limits, postures and gait, neurology, palpation's and clinical syndromes.

This book is easy to follow and use, and would recommend it to anyone.

first reputable book on repairable systems

This book by Ascher is one of the earliest to concentrate on this topic. Even today there are few books on the topic. Rigdon's new book is more current. This book is referenced by Nelson in his text on recurrent events and I believe that Nelson analyzed data taken from Ascher's book.
Good first introduction but you may prefer Rigdon's book as it should be much more up-to-date.

About the Author
Ilkay Zihni Chirali was born in 1946 in Lemba (Çirali) Gazi Baf, Cyprus. He grew up in a village by the sea where people, animals and plants were dependent upon each other. They shared the same simplicity and their environment was always treated with conviction, respect and love. He eventually left Cyprus to pursue his higher education, first in Turkey and then in Sweden and England. In 1982 he emigrated to Australia, where he studied Chinese Medicine with Professor Wong Lun and Master Danial Wong. Ilkay qualified as an acupuncturist in Melbourne, Australia, where he opened his first Acupuncture and Stress Therapy Clinic. He returned to England in 1987 and now runs a clinic in Bexleyheath, Kent, where he treats children as well as adults.
Ilkay’s wide-ranging studies have brought him expertise in acupuncture, Chinese Herbal Medicine, clinical hypnotherapy, the Lusher Personality Test, paediatric acupuncture and western medicine pathology. He has studied further in Nanjing, China, at the College of Traditional Chinese Medicine and First Affiliated Hospital in the Internal Medicine, Dermatology and Gynaecology departments.
Ilkay has practiced cupping from an early age, gaining his first experience of the technique when employing the traditional Turkish folklore remedy for colds. He has been organizing regular cupping workshops both in the UK and overseas since 1988 and a BBC TV programme where he appeared as an “Expert”. To date, he has given over 60 public lectures and a BBC World Service Radio talk on the subject of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Cupping Therapy.

Kindle version is incomplete

Excellent print content on the kindle version. However, that content is meant to go hand in hand with digital content they talk about but will only include with the paper version. So be careful purchasing the kindle version as you won't get the whole thing. I spoke with customer service about the situation as well as trying to contact the publisher but all was to no avail. I find it disappointing that this shortage is not made clear up front, especially since the kindle version is almost the same cost but there is no printing or storing or shipping costs.

VERY good book, thorough on history & all types of Cupping. My only wish is that there were more color photos instead of so many black & white. Otherwise a wonderful book to accompany anyone's training or curiosity on the subject.

This book was vital in my preparation for the PMP exam.

I just recently took the PMP exam and passed on my first attempt. After purchasing many prep books, study guides, flash cards,etc. for the exam, I am convinced that this book was the main key to success. The content is easy to read and highlights areas for recall in the PMBOK. Each phase of the book covers questions that properly evaluate retention of material and a true understanding of PM knowledge areas. Definitely the right choice in preparing for the PMP exam.

In the first five minutes of owning this book I was SO GLAD I bought it!

I just received this book today and after just reading through the first few pages, I actually broke into tears because I FINALLY feel like I know where to start so I might be ready for my exam in 30 days (I've been procrastinating because I honestly didn't even know how to begin!), THANK YOU!!!

I have taken some basic classes (provided by my employer) and have a ton of notes and even when I felt okay about my knowledge base I have not been at all consistent in my practice tests (even open book!), so never felt like I should take the test. I am now at my test registration anniversary deadline (one year to take the test) with one chance to pass or fail... eeek! So last week I decided I would not be forfeiting all this time and money by just cancelling it. I saw this book and ordered it.

When the book arrived today. I opened it and from the get go found it shows me EXACTLY what I need to really focus on first so that I have the base knowledge to proceed. And I know that after I do that, I can continue to use this tool to help me eliminate the wrong answers to find the best answer with the practice tests (I LOVE THIS APPROACH!) Just looking at a few questions I saw immediately how I can use the knowledge I've gained through my classes and with some additional review of everything I've learned in these next few weeks, to eliminate wrong answers, which gives me the confidence I need to go through all this for just one more month.

Fantastic! Well written, well organized and chock full tips and over 1000 practice questions.

I am still early into the book and I have been anxiously waiting for the kindle version. I have several of Aileen's other books and I like her straightforward and clear writing style. After just a couple of pages, she clearly tells you what you need to memorize for the exam, and yes ... there are some things you HAVE to memorize. She then gives you strategies on how to memorize them and also what things to become familiar with. She discusses how we inspect deliverables, audit processes, and how inputs and outputs are plans / documents typically and tools/techniques involve doing something with those plans - actions. I like how this book is structured by process group as it not only helps for the exam but also in day-to-day, real project management.

I look forward to delving further into the book and doing the practice questions in preparation for my exam.

Also, a quick thank you to the author. I have emailed her several times and she has always replied and tried to help me with any questions. That is the heart of a true teacher and one who cares for her students - both the students who take her class and those who use her books and other materials.

About the Author

Jon C.W. Pevehouse is Professor of Political Science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is an award-winning teacher and scholar. His research interests focus on international political economy, foreign policy, and international organizations. He is currently the editor of the leading professional journal in the field, International Organization. He received his BA from the University of Kansas and his PhD from Ohio State University.

 

Joshua S. Goldstein is Professor Emeritus of International Relations, American University (Washington, DC) and Research Scholar, University of Massachusetts-Amherst. He is an award-winning scholar who has written and spoken widely on war and society, including war's effects on gender, economics, and psychological trauma). His book War and Gender won the International Studies Association's "Book of the Decade" award.

Really great book on IR. Engaging!

This book is required for the Thomas Edison State College online course "International Relations I" (POS-315). Just be careful on this one that you get a fairly recent version, only a couple years behind the current year. I got the 2010-2011 version and it worked great for the class I took in 2014. It's an engaging book. You'll read the whole thing in the class.

This is important information if you're taking the TESC course. The used edition of the book does not come with access to the online companion MyPoliSciKit, but that is something you NEED. Even if you don't want to shell out $100 for a new book with the access code, that's ok. Get an older book and buy the access code (you can get it for about $35). I thought I would be ok on the tests by just rereading the books. Nope. Once I got the online companion and went through the quizzes, I found out how much deeper I needed to go and what to study. They are great practice for the Midterm and Final, which are each worth 25% of your course grade (REALLY important to do well on those!). There's a lot on the online site but the quizzes are what I used most, and they are super helpful.

And hey! I just found the $35 companion site for the textbook online: for FREE. Just searched "international relations practice test" and up it came! That. Is super cool. YOU WILL NEED THIS site for the practice quizzes, so take note! The only thing it's missing that the paid site has is flashcards, but there are other sites where you can find those. If at some point this site doesn't work, you might need to buy an access code for $35 at the My PoliSciKit site for the practice quizzes and other material. This site could very easily mean the difference between a pass and fail on the tests, so it is not a bad deal. (less)

Poli Sci 7 Class

This book was a pretty good book for my political science 7 class. It goes in great detail and tells you everything you need to know about the subject- short and sweet. One thing I did not like about it (i.e the one star deduction) is that it doesn't go into great detail as I would like it to. It's understandable considering the size of the book. Some of the information that I wanted to know more about I did more research- thats the lawyer side of me. Getting ahead for law school. But this book is overall a good book!

Very informative overview of International Relations

If you're interested in IR and want to understand a lot of the basic theories and history involved in the subject, this is a great book to get you started. I used it in conjunction with a college class, but even the book alone is enough to give someone a pretty firm grasp of the field. It's not an in-depth study, but still a very good read. I'd recommend to anyone interested in the subject.

A great starting point

This book is a great starting point if you are considering a cycling trip to New Zealand.
Unfortunately this book is getting old and the road conditions and amenities along the way have changed. But it is still a good timetable for figuring out how long you should think about it taking this cycle the different places in New Zealand.

Useful book for trip

Useful book, although not essential. Basically biking in NZ is easy because there are only a few roads, once you get out of the cities. The book doesn't have enough detail in it to eliminate the need for maps.... I'd say that reading blogs and getting maps would be a better use of time than getting this book, but it is nice to have a few itineraries suggested.

In February '97 me, my bike, and this book covered 1300 miles of New Zealand. I used this book extensively to plan my route by mixing & matching the routes covered in the book. obtw, in New Zealand you don't need a map, you only have a couple of roads to choose from and this book covers just about everything you need. I highly recommend it and appreciate the effort Bruce put into the book.
