About the Author

Dr. Jeffrey K. Liker is Professor of Industrial and Operations Engineering at the University of Michigan and President of Liker Lean Advisors. He is author of the international best-seller, The Toyota Way: 14 Management Principles from the World’s Greatest Manufacturer, 2004 (26 languages, over 900,000 copies sold), and has coauthored eight other books about Toyota including The Toyota Way to Lean Leadership (2011). His articles and books have won twelve Shingo Prizes for Research Excellence. In 2012 he was inducted into the Association of Manufacturing Excellence Hall of Fame and in 2016 inducted into the Shingo Academy.

Liker lives in Ann Arbor, Michigan with his wife and children.

Karyn Ross is a Lean consultant and executive coach focused on driving sustainable business culture change in service organizations. She has worked with companies such as Paychex, PrimePay, Zurich Insurance, and National Taxi Limo to help them develop a culture of problem solving and improved business practices. A regular contributor to the Lean Leadership Ways Industry Week Blog, she has also written for The Lean Management Journal and Industrial Engineer Magazine. Ross resides in Naperville, Illinois.

Many of us in leadership roles read a lot in the hopes of finding "that book" - the one that changes your paradigm around your role in transforming your organization, clarifying questions you've been asking yourself or ones you didn't know but you could somehow feel. ANOTHER GREAT BOOK FROM JEFF LIKER. MUST READ, ABSOLUTELY!

Jeff shares with us another great book on the Toyota Way, not just by expanding the thinking to service, but also by clarifying again his deeper thoughts about the Toyota Way itself, in its clearer expression yet. Jeff and Karyn also make a wonderful job of showing very practical ways to jump into service issues with the Toyota Way, in a language adapted to service cultures and largely free of manufacturing lingo. A delightful read, and a real success. Read it, use it!

The Toyota Way to Service Excellence by Jeffery K. Liker & Karyn Ross
First, I highly recommend this book. As a retired Vice President of Quality Assurance, Plant Manager and college professor I am very familiar with and have used the Toyota methods extensively. In my experience I have found it is much more difficult to get buy-in to the Toyata way from service and administrative personnel than from manufacturing personnel. Liker and Ross have done an excellent job showing why and how the Toyota way can work in the service areas. They also did a great job showing why it must be done if organizations want to be more successful. I must caution that one size does not fit all and each organization must implement in a way that fits their organization. I received a free copy of The Toyota Way to Service Excellence by Jeffery K. Liker & Karyn Ross from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review. Many thanks to NetGalley.

Later, her mother is too busy for special words, and the school bus is too noisy. Lola's growing frustration over her inability to express herself is delightfully drawn. Each picture shows the little creature more and more distraught, until she finally explodes with emotion at dinnertime. Lola's parents respond generously with kisses, and all is well until bedtime when Lola worries whether her special words will be back on her lips in the morning. (1995, not reviewed), this book stars Lola, a nut-brown hamster who could be an adopted cousin of Nutbrown Hare. Lola feels words puffing out her cheeks, bursting inside her, but when she tries to express her special words, her father is leaving for work and her mother is too busy. The school bus, cafeteria, and playground are too noisy for the words to be heard, and the teacher is preoccupied. Lola returns home and sulks until the words unwittingly ``came flying out of her mouth and worked their magic.'' It's no surprise that Lola's special words are ``I love you, I love you! I love you so much!'' Hugs abound among the puffy-cheeked rodents in this mushy, overstated tale and its greeting-card message. Wonderful story and illustrations

I purchased this book in Dutch when I was visiting Holland a few weeks ago. I always purchase a childrens' book for a little friend of mine when I travel overseas. Sometimes I'm able to find something in the native language with an English translation. Or, I buy the native language version and get some help with a translation. I spent quite a while looking through the childrens' section in an Amsterdam bookstore and fell in love with the story (which I thought I understood in spite of my lack of understanding of Dutch) and the illustrations. I got some help translating the book and will be curious to see how close my version comes to the published one! The illustrations are wonderful. I think they will appeal to 2-5 year-olds and also to the adults reading to them. There are some wonderful little details in them.

Some times you just have to say it...........

This book is wonderful! The pictures are great and the story is lovely.
My 7 year old refers to Lola as the little girl whose cheeks keep getting biggger until the words just have to come out.
The book only takes about 5 minutes to read but the message will last a life time. It tells children, and parents, how important it is that we tell the people we love, "I love you, I love you, I love you so much!"
This would be a great book for new parents to begin reading to their bundle of joy right from the start.
A favorite in our home and is sure to be one in your home too.

A useful companion to Morgan Jones

I have a large collection of valve electronics books and having been spoilt by the older, classic texts, I tend to be pretty critical of the modern ones, especially some of the chaff coming out of the Germanic countries at the moment. However, with this book I was pleasantly surprised.

It is not overpriced, and it covers a good deal of information I have not seen discussed in much depth in other books, in particular the various idiosyncrasies of output transformers- the author's speciality. It is not really suitable for beginners as there is a LOT of assumed knowledge- try Morgan Jones' books for that. It is aimed more at improvers who want to dig deeper into the finer details of (mostly) power output stages.

It can at times be rather pompous, as the author talks in the first person and seems to think pretty highly of himself. He likes to give self-aggrandizing names to fairly ordinary circuits, and talks about phase distortion as if it is something new. The diagrams are mixed in style and sometimes pretty ugly, and there is no index, so I've knocked a star off.

Very special book!

Beautifully clear explanations. The math is at a sufficient depth to be of great use if you're really serious about designing tube amplifiers. Van Der Veen has a true knack for prioritizing concepts to help the reader think through impedance issues, math in the complex domain and framing design challenges as creative opportunities.
Sometimes translations of technical material can suffer, but nothing is lost here. I noticed the author had a hand in the translation himself and the result is a very human dialog with the reader.
I will keep this book within easy reach for the foreseeable future. Six or seven stars are in order here!

The book came promptly. It appears to be in good shape with the pages however the cover smells of smoke, and looks like it had been through a fire. Overall we were satisfied with the price and condition.

This book was well detailed and went through all of things that you should know about Gandhi and his life. I did not know the amount of good services and deeds that he did until i read this book by Jeanette Eaton. For being the first thing about Gandhi that i have read i found it very educational, and well worth reading.

Patrick Winsor writes in the gay romance and erotica genre. He believes in deep, intricate relationships and not fading to black when the scenes start to get hot. This was not my cup 'o tea

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review

I have to admit that I have been struggling a bit with how to rate this. I enjoyed the blurb is something that is right up my alley: potential GFY, exploration of relationships, bromance. The seriocomic warning had me looking forward to a potentially fun book; I loved the way it was written. Unfortunately, I didn't love it and I found myself doing more cringing than blushing or laughing. The first sentence mentions "dark" sexual desires, this book is a bit more dark overall than I tend to prefer. There were definitely some erotic scenes in this book, but I found myself thinking "say wha?????????" rather than "wow that is hot".

Levi is just starting college, so I am guessing he is about 18. Young, but certainly not naive. He is a part of this brotherhood that is sounds like he has been a part of for a long time, so to think of what he was doing when he was underage just icks me out. Thankfully none of that was written on the page.

Jayden is Levi's roommate. He (in his mind) is straight and looking forward to losing his virginity to some hot girl he meets on campus. He is young and very naive. Without any previous inkling that he finds guys attractive, he all of a sudden finds Levi completely irresistible. They are having sex, bareback, and then involving 2 other guys in the shower within hours of meeting. And Levi was so "huge" and rough with no preparation so that it was painful. And Jayden had no problem with that as a virgin? I sat there saying OUCH. It was not sexy at all to me. And then they are saying I love you. After meeting just hours before. *shaking my head* And then to paraphrase: Levi says "come with me and join the family" and Jayden says "I have no clue what you are talking about, but anything for you because I love you". Yes, they are young. Young people do stupid things. But still. Ugh.

So we find out about Levi's "family" and there are more sexual activities that would make most people cringe. Yet Jayden is perfectly fine with all of it, even though he has no clue what he is fine with because he doesn't know what is going on. And the punishment that Levi gets?? Oh hell no. Nuh uh. Not even going to think about that again. I'm not a man, but I feel pain from that.

OK, so those were all personal thoughts about the content which didn't sit well with me. That is personal choice, and . For the actual book itself, it felt a bit rushed. Yes we got a whole "romance" (they meet, fall in love, and have challenges), yes it is not a really story (close to 100 pages), yet it all took place over maybe 3 days total? I don't understand anything about Levi and how/why he became a part of the family, or why Jayden is at college with only one bag and very few belongings, or what happens next. It didn't feel much like a romance book to me. It was more of an erotic story with a hit of possible romance.

It's probably more of a 2.5 star read for me, but of course there aren't half star ratings. So how do I rate it-do I round up or down? I can't say I really enjoyed it, but I can't say I hated it or that it was the worst thing I ever read.

Well written just didn't have IT for me

First, a quick apology for not completing the review in a timely manner...Sorry!

The book was written well and I enjoyed the story told. Honestly, there was something about the story that did not make it an awesome read. I have thought about it and still cannot come up with the reason my reading experience was not more than 3 stars.

The story started great and I was intrigued of where it would take me. It was a classic start college and discover yourself and fall in love and did have an unusual turn of events. The idea behind the group was great because it showed caring and safety within a community of sexually active young men. Maybe the picture it painted in my head threw the story out of focus for me. Even though I liked the idea behind this "family" of men and they respected the new loving relationship from the MCs, it felt like it cheapened their relationship. I would find my mind placing the relationship in the middle of just respected sex with the other family members. I really did get what [author:Patrick Winsor|14611951] was trying to portray but in my mind it messed with the flow. Like I said, I did enjoy the read and thank the author for giving us a story. The sexiness was at least a 7.5 and the characters were great. Don't ignore this book because it was not a raving review from my mindset; honestly, give it a go because it doesn't leave you questioning WTF did I just read.

Fun, quick read

The first part of the book was awesome! I liked the intro where we meet the two boys, and I wish there was more character development from there--Jayden seemed cool and mysterious, Levi was apparently very high-maintenance. What are their backgrounds, and how do they fit together? How do they get along? Anyway, they find out they are roommates, and Levi quickly develops a crush on Jayden. Jayden is seemingly straight. From here, it moves VERY quickly. Too quickly for my liking. Especially since Jayden is supposed to be coming to grips with the fact that he is gay... That doesn't seem like something you get through easily. Levi's mom was funny, although not quite believable (I guess moms like that exist, somewhere?)...

The second part of the book gets into the initiation into the Brotherhood. It was very intense, but I was okay with it. It made for an interesting story line, and also was a way of introducing secondary characters.

Overall, I thought the book was well written. I did get a bit confused at the end--it seemed like the names Jayden and Levi were switched in some places (like, it said "Jayden" but should have said "Levi"?). I would like to read more from this author!

Paul Butler, John Manfredi, and Peter Klein introduce and thoroughly explain a new approach to thinking simply, yet strategically: "That's TTW, Think to Win." I hasten to add that how "winning" is defined should be determined by the individuals and organizations that seek to achieve it. The key term is "strategic." I agree with Butler, Manfredi, and Klein that in the healthiest organizations, the most successful organizations, there is effective strategic thinking at all levels and in all areas of the given enterprise.

As they point out, "Many companies have generated remarkable successes by creating traditions of strategic thinking. By instilling this capability throughout the organizations, companies such as Keurig, Jamba Juice, Procter & Gamble, Gillette, and New Balance have enjoyed years of dynamic growth. Butler, Manfredi, and Klein identify five principles that can serve as a "compass" to guide and inform strategic thinking:

o Challenge assumptions: Take no one and nothing for granted.
o Scope the issue: Determine its nature and extent.
o Rely on facts and data: Separate empirical evidence from "common knowledge."
o Focus on the vital few: Focus on the 10% that has the greatest impact on the 90%.

Think to Win (TTW) is the best strategy book for business leaders I have read in years! I couldn’t put it down until I read it cover-to-cover. In their book, the authors Butler, Manfredi, and Klein guide business management through the process of thinking through strategy rather than just responding to perceived threats or potential opportunities. This keeps C-level managers and their reports from business or project failure caused by rushed ideas rather than thinking things through. What the book teaches works for both non-profit and profit organizations. The authors start the book with tested guiding principles that sound a lot like quality improvement processes as well as management and organizational teachings at the MBA level, yet better illustrated than what the scholars teach. Their guidelines include: challenge assumptions, scope the issue, rely on facts and data, focus on the vital few, and finally connect the dots to see what will work and prevent a scattered approach for change. The process starts with 4 steps and tools to look at the present situation. During the steps of part 1, you will find tools like data analysis, SWOT, and SCA explained. Then the process moves to the four steps for looking to and planning the future. In part 2, you will continue to use SWOT plus develop: vision, core strategies, goals, plans, and communications. I thought so much of the guidelines and processes in this book that I included an outline of both on my business productivity blog!

This is one of the best business books I have ever read

This is one of the best business books I have ever read! I have been in the business world for over 35 years and through many complicated “canned” programs that last a few years in the company until replaced by the next fad. TTW is a straight forward, common sense approach to understanding your business and taking steps to formulating a winning future. It has many real life business references where the process has been successful and is very enlightening and entertaining. I have three children who are all gainfully employed with Fortune 500 companies and I am having them all read this book as a great primer for their ongoing business education.

Summer's over, and Connor Connolly is headed back to school to start junior year. But with metabands falling from the sky, the world has changed overnight, and now there are thousands of new metahumans. Just like regular humans, not all metahumans are using their new powers for good. Now, Connor's not only dealing with the pressures of being a super-human and training with his mentor, Midnight, but also has to balance relationships with the people he cares for most-people who find themselves on different sides of the fence when it comes to their feelings about the new metahumans and the impact they're having on everyone else's lives. As the world struggles to adjust to the events of the past few months, Connor's alter ego, Omni, works with The Agency to apprehend law-breaking metahumans, and detain them at the Silver Island Meta Detention Facility. When he's recruited for a job assisting the government agency with disarming one of the most powerful and secretive metas in Bay View City, he never expects the devastation of that mission or the effect it will have on both humans and metas. good 2nd book, doesn't really end on a cliffhanger.

Almost didn't get this book after seeing the review that it ends on a cliffhanger... it doesn't ... not in the sense that I use cliffhanger anyway. As an analogy w/o giving any spoilers, the "cliffhanger" is akin to the shot at the end of XMen: Last Stand where Magneto moves a metal chess piece or Xavier speaking through a formerly comatose hospital patient. Doesn't really affect the main story but does T-up the next one quite well.

it is a "classic part 2" though in that the battle is won but the war still rages on. So... if that's too much of a cliffhanger for you... may be better to wait till #3. (it wasn't for me...)

On a grander level, I'm kinda wondering where Mr. Reynolds is going with this. For the most part all the meta are restricted to Earth... or at least our solar system. So since it's plausible that aliens dropped the meta bands they can do so w/o risking retaliation from us as the meta bands don't allow us to leave the solar system and don't increase our technological knowledge.

I doubt these themes will come up in book 3, but it would be an interesting world to continue to write stories in, especially if those stories get to these issues. HOWEVER... book 2 comes dangerously close to making that a hard transition. There are 4 key things Mr Reynolds does that if the bands were supposed to be some sort of self-contained test of the human race then we're chipping at the walls of that self-containment. I can't really go into 3 of those as ... spoilers... but the 4th... some metas can shrink themselves down to the molecular level. (They are hired by rich people to cure their cancer.) However, a much more interesting use of a molecule sized meta is to help jump-start a nanotechnology revolution. Making the first nano machine is hard... making the 2nd not so much... making the first with the help of a meta... pretty easy.

Couldn't put it down

I really love this series. As a fan of the superhero genre its easy to say that no new ground has been tread, but Tom Reynolds manages to make everything seem fresh. I was worried after the first book that this would devolve into YA drivel, but was pleasantly surprised at the development of Connor. Even though he's 16 you don't get the sense that he's dealing with teenage angst or hormones (most of the time I forgot he was that young until it was mentioned). He comes across as a hero who has really accepted his burden regardless of cost. This allows him to become more than the what we normally get from a follow up novel where the hero over examines if its worth it. The power system lays a unique groundwork for problems and solutions that kept me reading from cover to cover. I liked the ending. Some people didn't, but as a second act it fits right into the universe and set up more books. (Hooray)

An Interesting Concept that Fails to Deliver

I desperately wanted to like this book (along with the first one).

The concept was an interesting idea; for the uninitiated, the series essentially asks the question, "What would happen if mysterious, silver bracelets of unknown origin started showing up by the hundreds and granting amazing and varying abilities to the different people to find them?" The concept is both practical and intriguing. It's practical because it gives you a relatively unique reason to have multiple people (heroes, villains, and the morally ambiguous in-between) running around with super powers. It's intriguing because the mysterious origin can go in so many directions and be easily explored as a sub-plot throughout one or more stories. Are these metallic bands part of some massive, international conspiracy to test new technology are humans? Are they some sort of divine gift, or perhaps provided by aliens as a means of making humans strong enough to be enslaved as military fodder for their own war-time agendas? There are any number of directions the concept could have gone.

Unfortunately, the author fails to take the concept anywhere. It seems every character in the book has given up on exploring the nature of the bracelets before they even begin. So where it could have been a multifaceted mystery to gradually uncover, instead it gets thrown at the reader as "This is why all these people have powers," and then forgotten about.

The other problem I had throughout the book (and the first suffered from this as well, though to a much lesser degree) is the meandering, directionless nature of the plot. It isn't until about 75% of the way into the book that the plot actually feels like it's going anywhere. Up until that point, it feels largely like a day-in-the-life-of-this-hero sort of story, rehashing all the same tired hero-problems that we've seen before (a double life is difficult, it sucks keeping secrets from your best friend and girlfriend, etc.). In addition, the author has a bad habit of introducing a big problem with little preamble, and then ignoring the problem and leaving it largely unresolved.

For details on what I'm talking about above, read on but beware of some spoilers.

*******SOME MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD********

Regarding the meandering plot, there's a plot beat that does go beyond the day-in-the-life type action around a quarter of the way into the story, in which our hero accompanies a team to capture a high-profile businessman who may or may not have powers himself. You might call this an inciting incident, as it sets the ball rolling for what seems like might be a big showdown (which isn't, but more on that later). However, the next event that ties into this one at all doesn't come until about three-fourths of the way into the book, and ends with the hero as little more than a bystander.

Then there's the issue of unresolved issues. There are many, many things that are brought up and left unresolved throughout the story. I understand that this is meant to be part of a series, but it feels less like a "to be continued" and more like "oops, I forgot I started that sub-plot." For example, the hero has one or two run-ins with his best friend where his friend, usually the stereotypical fun and light-hearted side-kick type, is moody and unhappy. Then while out fighting crime, out of the blue the hero is confronted with a group we've heard nothing of earlier (called the Blanks, for reasons I can't remember, and they're anti-meta vigilante's apparently), and lo and behold, the one member of the Blanks to get his mask knocked off in the scuffle happens to the hero's best friend. So what happens next? Absolutely nothing. We get a few lines inside our hero's head about how he can't believe or understand why his best friend belongs to this group, and the issue is forgotten.

********SLIGHTLY BIGGER SPOILERS*********

The ending of the book not only left a number of major threads completely unresolved, but introduced a new one at the last second, as if the author thought the audience needed yet another unresolved story line as an incentive to pick up the next book.

First, several meta's show up demanding all other meta's turn in their bracelets or they'll destroy them by force. You'd think this was a setup for a fun showdown between them and our hero, but instead the supposedly powerless Midnight, our hero's mentor, suddenly out of the blue not only turns out to have meta bands himself, but he also suddenly has a robotic suit of armor powered by one of his meta bands, and he goes up against the villains himself. The most of the battle the audience gets is seeing Midnight and the villains throw each other around a bit while the hero gets the much less interesting responsibility of evacuating the meta-prison that they're fighting around. And not only do we miss the fight (since the hero isn't in it), but we don't even learn how the fight turns out, or who comes out on top.

Instead of our hero fighting three powerful villains, our hero instead dukes it out over a few pages with a fellow heroin as the two have a disagreement over whether to release the dangerous meta-inmates on the city or let them stay and die at the hands of the villains. And that fight itself leaves some unresolved threads, as the hero falls unconscious from the heroin using some strange, unseen power (which is never explained), and wakes up to find the inmates gone to who-knows-where and doing who-knows-what.

Lastly, our hero teleports out of there badly damaged from his brief and less-than-thrilling fight with the heroin, landing in his brother's apartment and unmasking himself just in time for his brother's random girlfriend, who showed up exactly once before, to catch him, but lo and behold (notice how things keep happening out of the blue?), she's not who she said she was (anybody with any sense saw that part coming, at least) and is actually a recruiter for some sort of program or school, which they want the hero to join.

So, we're left with no idea what happened to the villains who were trying to destroy other meta's, and no idea what happened to Midnight who was fighting them. We're left with no idea what happened with his best friend, either why he joined the Blanks or whether or not he's still with them. And we're left with no idea what this 'school program' is, who is running, why they're running it, or whether they're good or bad (or somewhere in between). I don't mind cliffhangers when you've made it clear there will be a sequel, but the author treats these threads less like mysteries to be solved later and more like things we shouldn't bother caring about.

All we really have are a series of three or four big events that seem to occur out of nowhere and with little or no buildup, and no resolution. It's as if the author was writing random day-to-day events for the hero and thought, "Hey, such-and-such would be a cool thing to have happen," and so the author drops that event in without warning. Then, before bothering to resolve any of these events, he got tired of writing and just published what he had already.

Another big issue I had was the development (or lack thereof) of the characters. We really aren't given any reasons for why the characters are doing what they're doing. For our main hero, Conner/Omni, we never find out why he feels the need to be a hero. Even in the first book, this isn't an issue that's ever covered. He acts as though having these powers makes him obligated to be a hero, but neither he nor anybody else asks "Why?" Then there's his mentor, Midnight; I understand that he's meant to be mysterious and formidable both physically and mentally, but we don't get even the slightest hint as to how he developed his skills/intellect, or where his apparent unlimited resources come from. And like the hero, we're never given any hint as to why he does what he does. He's basically like Batman with all the skills and cunning, not to mention gadgets to suit any occasion, but without any apparent motive for fighting crime.

On top of not having any explanation for why the characters are doing what they're doing, there also isn't a single character that grows in any way throughout the story. Every single character is exactly the same in the end as they were in the beginning. The only one who comes close to having any character development is Conner's best friend, but that's only in comparison to the first novel; In the first book, he's the happy and peppy sidekick, while the in second book, all we see is him being moody and angry. And for as little interaction and affect his character had, it may has well have just been a different character from the first book altogether.

IN CONCLUSION . . .

You might be wondering at this point why I've even given the book two stars. The truth is, the initial concept was definitely a strong one. Also, though I don't know for sure, I get the sense this book was probably self published (Amazon lists the publisher as "Leonard & Calyer" but the only publications I can find under that imprint are the two books in this series). And while I don't typically like double standards, I have to admit that this is definitely above the average in quality compared to other self published books. There are some typos/grammatical errors (more so than a traditionally published book would have) but not so many that it becomes a distraction.

Besides, part of me is hoping that the author improves his storytelling abilities before taking a crack at the next book in the series. Most of the issues I have really boil down to a single flaw; Reynolds has issues looking at the big picture, to see how all the pieces fit together. If he can get a bitter grip on piecing these disparate events together in a more organic way, while finding at least one purpose to drive the story and build on to a dramatic conclusion, I think he could turn into a marvelous writer.
