About the Author
Liam FitzPatrick is Joint Managing Partner of Agenda Strategies, an organization specializing in change communications. He is one of the co-authors of the definitive competency model for internal communicators and co-founded the Black Belt series of training for internal communicators. He was previously Head of Practice in Internal Communications for Bell Pottinger and has worked both in-house and for major consulting companies, delivering communications programs for clients in different sectors. He is a Fellow of the UK Chartered Institute of Public Relations where he has been involved in planning the education and training of PR practitioners and is a member of the Global Certification Council of the International Association of Business Communicators.
Klavs Valskov is Joint Managing Partner of Agenda Strategies, an organization specializing in change communications. He has worked in PR, marketing and communication for almost fifteen years with organizations such as L'Oreal, Accenture and in ministries for the Danish Government. From 2008-2013 he was the award-winning Global Director of Communication in the world's largest container shipping company, Maersk Line. He is also part of the Advisory Board at Institute of Business Communication at Copenhagen Business School.

Some good, some bad

This book is okay and the authors make some good points. Some parts are a bit preachy and there are some complete time wasting parts. For example - a whole chapter dedicated to whether internal communications should sit in HR or marketing. This is a strategic decision made well above the pay grade of any ordinary communications advisor. There is no reason to put this in the book. The book states that this is a topic frequently debated - in ten years of internal communications experience I have never once heard it debated. It's just not an issue!

This book is written by academics with limited exposure to real world corporate communications. However there are still some useful bits and it's still with buying.

Hopefully the second edition will include crisis communications too!

Theodore Johnson has worked as a science educator for more than 17 years. During this time, he has taught students from a variety of socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds as well as different levels of academic achievement. For the past 10 years, he has taught at Lowell High School in San Francisco, a high-achieving public school. Prior to moving to San Francisco, he taught in the Providence Public Schools (Rhode Island) where he helped plan and implement the district’s first science magnet high school, and contributed to a district-wide standards-based curriculum redesign. Mr. Johnson holds a B.Sc. in Chemistry (Tougaloo College), a M.Sc. in Biology (Brown University), and MA in Teaching (Brown University). Additionally, he completed a professional training in secondary school administration (Providence College) and has been certified as a school administrator as well as a biology, chemistry, and general science teacher in Rhode Island, California, and Connecticut. He has also worked on a variety of research projects in the fields of physical and organic chemistry, plant genetics, and immunology. Aside from drawing on his substantive scientific knowledge, the author has put his expertise in curriculum design and instruction his to work in developing this book. He applied a narrative approach based on central themes in biological systems and guided by the AP Biology curriculum framework. It is a very good attempt at an 'all a young (or older) woman ...

This book is now quite old (copyright 1991) but the information it contains is still perfectly valid. It is a very good attempt at an 'all a young (or older) woman needs to know about the 'mechanics of her reproductive system' book. As well as the usual 'straight out of the High School Biology book' stuff regarding menstrual cycles, it goes into considerable (but not too deep) depth about sexually transmissible diseases, how abortions are performed, self examination, other medical procedures such as hysterectomy, vaginal reconstruction, tubal ligation and even vasectomy. This could be a good book for a mother to give to a daughter in her mid-teens. The daughter would keep it on her book shelf and browse it as and when she feels the need. The many photos of women's genitals are probably reassuring to a young woman that what her genitals look like is normal, but it also means this is not a book to leave on the coffee table, or have in a high school library.
My only criticism of the book would be that a lot of the black and white drawings would have been easier to understand if they had been colour.
The target audience for this book is very specific, but if you are in that audience, this is a very good book.

Worth every penny

From the amazing illustrations by then-artist, now-nurse Suzann Gage of everything important to know about women's bodies and reproductive health--from cervical and breast self exams and the effect areas of various forms of birth control, to an "inner view of a woman's breasts" that shows how "milk secretion [is] like a shower head" (wish I'd seen that before I breast-fed!), a wonderful vulva/hymen/cervix photo gallery, and radical redefinitions of the biology of the clitoris--this is a fantastic book for any girl or woman who wants to know how her body works. It was a powerful publication in 1981 and it's just as good today. Further, it's a reminder that the 1970s nurtured a flourishing of activists who believed in self/adult education, and produced widely accessible and useful publications. The book should be updated and reissued, but until then, buy the original publishing--it's worth the cost.

As a feminist sex educator this book is the closest I'll ever get to having a Sex Bible about how a woman's body functions. Whenever I have a question I go to my bookshelf and start reading "A New View." These women are among the many unsung heroes. Their book was originally published by Simon & Schuster but at the end of the first year, one of the "good old boys" finally noticed they described how women could easily administer their own abortions at home with some thin plastic tubing and a suction pump. The book was GONE in a flash! I"ll let you figure out why.

About the Author
MICHAEL J. HOLOSKO, Ph.D., M.S.W., is a professor of Social Work at the University of Windsor and adjunct instructor at Norfolk State University. He has taught in schools of: social work (primarily), nursing, public administration, and applied social science in Canada, the United States, Hong Kong, Australia, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. For the past 26 years, he has been a consultant to a variety of large and small health and human service organizations in the areas of: program evaluation, outcomes, organizational development, communication, leadership, visioning, organizational alignment, and stress management. He has published numerous monographs, chapters, articles, and texts in the areas of evaluation, health care, gerontology, social policy, music intervention, and spirituality. He served on the editorial boards of: Research on Social Work Practice; Journal of Health and Social Policy; Stress, Trauma and Crisis; Journal of Human Behavior and Social Environment; the Hong Kong Journal of Social Work; Journal of Social Service Research and the Journal of Evidence Based Social Work Practice. He has served on numerous boards of directors for a variety of local, provincial, federal, and international human service agencies, including Health and Welfare Canada's Research Advisory Committee. Over the past few years he has taken his concerns for advocacy and social justice to the airwaves, where he is billed as "The Community Doctor" on AM800 CKLW and The New WI out of Windsor, Ontario Canada. He has a wife Ann, son Joel, and daughter Adrienne and currently resides in Windsor, Ontario, Canada.
