From School Library Journal
Grade 8 Up This tale of friendship and treachery among the gods and heroes presents Cerberus, the three-headed mad dog of mythology and Guardian of the Gates of Hell, as a much misunderstood pupa noble and tragic figure. It seems that Cerberus, the affectionate and frisky offspring of a doting monster mother, grew up lonely and tender-hearted, yearning to be an everyday companion dog. His attachment to Delia, the little daughter of fisherfolk, was both his solace and his undoing. To ransom her from the Underworld, he was forced to serve the god Hades at the Gates, perhaps forever. Evslin's elaboration on tradition is accompanied by superb color reproductions of paintings by artists such as Blake, Bosch, Van Gogh, Pollock, and Rothko, as well as sculptures, representations from Dante's ``Inferno,'' scenes from the Sistine Chapel, and native American mythic symbols. All are mood-enhancers and stimuli for pondering eternal themes of life and literature. Be aware that the great art here depicts the naked human form in a few instances. A treat for those who enjoy mythology and for those who are willing to try something very special. It's a serious, imaginative, and affecting work. Libby K. White, Schenectady County Public Library, N.Y.

Neat book!
By DarkOne
As a lover of Greek mythology, I checked this book out back in middle scool and, as an artist myself, loved it for the different art work throughout the book.

As an adult, I had to buy it! Glad I did!

It will be a keepsake!

As a matter-of-fact, I had to buy more of these series!

Check them out!

Cerberus by Bernard Evslin (Myths and Lengends)
By Ingrid
"The three-headed puppy stood blinking as he gazed about him. This pup had six eyes to peer out with. The three heads turned, the six eyes rolled, searching every corner of the dark cavern, trying to read the shadows."

Those were the words written by Bernard Evslin to describe this wonderful creation Cerberus. Cerberus, as noted, is a three headed dog, born to Echidne, daughter of the original serpent woman, Ceto. Echidne was half snake, and a fit mate for her husband Typhon, father to Cerberus.

The story begins one day, when Echidne laid a curiously lumpy egg. It hatched into a three-headed dog, Cerberus. "Its middle head was wolfish, with standing up ears and great, glowing dark eyes. The right head was skull-like and popeyed, a bull terrier's head. And the left head was that of a hound with flap ears, mournful eyes, and a quivering nose. All three heads had huge jaws with teeth like daggers. Though only a pup it was already half the size of a calf, and everyone looking upon it knew that, if allowed to live, it would grow as large as a bull".

Now, though you and I might've been terribly afraid if we had laid this egg and soon after had a Cerberus hatch from it, Echidne was proud. She adored Cerberus. Which was why she and Cerberus created a special bond and not even Hades could tear them apart, as he tries to many times in the story.

This book was a quick read and left me guessing after each chapter. The descriptive myth was just the book to read over the Thanksgiving break.

Though I enjoyed this book, there were parts of which could've had a little more excitement but overall, as noted above, it was a pleasing book to read. I definitely recommend this book to people who like fantasy and fiction stories (e.g. Harry Potter). For those of you who prefer a realistic read, this is probably not the best choice.

For those of you who are interested, I highly suggest buying or checking out Cerberus for a quick weekend read.

A review of this all-WONDERFUL Greek Mythology book!
By Laura
This book, Cerberus (Monsters of Mythology) by Bernard Evslin, is a true recommend! Don't think it's a children's book just by looking at it, people of all ages would strongly love it once they read it!! It tells of Cerberus's life from the beginning to the very end. This book also consists of LOVELY paintings in it. With a GREAT story and pictures, this book is a MUST buy!!! In the paragraphs below, I will tell you a little about this GREAT book!
You must probably think Cerberus is an awful monster in your first impression right? Well, after reading this story, you will get to know the real Cerberus! His great innocence and love for a dear young girl, Delia.
In the beginning, Cerberus was born from the dangerous monster(this creature consisting of a woman's head and with the body of a serpent, I forgot her name) and Typhon was Cerberus's father. This serpent woman and the all-destructive Typhon always had very strong and powerful kids.. or creatures. And when Cerberus was first born, Hades quickly found out. He immediately went out to meet Cerberus, when he saw him, Hades knew that Cerberus would be an excellent guard for his underworld. Lately, a few of the living sneaked into hell, and a few of the dead escaped, Hades needed higher security, so he needed Cerberus. But Cerberus's mother doesn't want that to happen.
Time passes by, one day Cerberus was out hunting and he found a little girl caught inside a shark... so he rescued her. Cerberus was shocked when Delia said she wasn't afraid of him, she even wanted to be his friend! Cerberus's heart melt. They later developed a great friendship. He grew fond of her. And she was the most important thing to him. He loved her. He would go play with her. Delia would always be seen playing with him and riding on his back. But then words got out to Hadies, and one of his henchmen, the queen of the Harpies, decided to stir a plot which causes Cerberus to become a henchmen of Hadies later on. It is truly a tragic story. It really shows the part of Cerberus we've NEVER seen before! It's a BIG recommend. :) SO BUY IT! You would NOT regret it!
